While usually known for pleasant weather, California looked a little more like Belgium during the Spring Classics during today's second stage. Temperatures around seven degrees Celsius and steady rain made for uncomfortable racing. Still, die-hard cycling fans lined the roads at the key spots to watch some of the top riders in the world compete. At the finish around the state capital the crowds were almost as big as last year, as they watched an impressive field sprint win from the man himself, Tom Boonen (Quick Step).

"It was pretty hectic because of the weather," Boonen said. "I wanted to wait and see so I got out front with Paolo, but Cipo let the guy from High Road, Mark Cavendish go, I'm not sure why. With 200 metres to go Cavendish had 30 metres in front of me and I saw he opened up and started sprinting. So I started my sprint there and I was able to catch him at the finish line, just in time."

High Road had three riders on the front heading into the final kilometre, with Gerald Ciolek sitting behind Cavendish. As Cavendish began his sprint Ciolek sat-up, slowing the rest of the field. But it was just too far from the line, and the swarm caught the Manxman inside the final 50 metres, with Boonen weaving around two riders with ease.

"Cavendish was gone out front and a couple of guys touched each other -- I don't know how or why but Cipollini left a hole," said Boonen. "As soon as everything opened up and I could start sprinting. Cavendish was all alone 30 metres in front of me. He looked back and started sprinting and I had to go then. I reached his wheel and then passed him in the last 10 metres."

"The sprint today was one of my best sprints ever," Boonen continued. "I didn't believe in it when I started because Cavendish is one of the fast riders and the gap was pretty immense - but I got my speed up and in the last 400 metres I think were one of my best 400 metres, so I'm very pleased with it."

The big winner today was Slipstream-Chipotle and its rider Tyler Farrar, who took advantage of the time bonuses available to pass former race leader Fabian Cancellara (Team CSC) by one second on general classification.

"Basically today played out exactly how we hoped it would," said Farrar. "We looked at the GC and the time bonuses and they way the race broke down. It was raining in the race and we didn't know what the situation was going to be. If the break away would eat up the bonuses or if we could have a crack at them. Luckily enough, by the time the bonuses came around there was only one rider up the road and we were able to give it a go. The team was amazing today. The guys delivered me perfectly to every bonus sprint, which made my life easier."

"I think tomorrow is going to be a very hard day," Farrar continued. "There are some big mountains on the plate but I think we have a few riders who can do pretty well tomorrow. We have some guys who are on fire in terms of their form and my hope is that I'll be handing this jersey over to one of my team-mates at the end of this stage."

Slipstream director sportif Jonathan Vaughters said today's riding was out of opportunity and not part of a larger plan. "We did it to do it," he said. "We were so close that if we didn't close the deal it would be like getting to third base with a girl in high school! We were finishing unfinished business from yesterday."

As for his team's performance so far in this year's tour, compared to the previous two, he said. "You can see the guys from last year, three of the eight, are going perfectly well and have risen to the level. Now we have a sprinter that can close the deal. I'm sure Tyler will lose the race lead tomorrow, but later in the week I think he'll be contesting the sprint."

Following Boonen in the field sprint today were Heinrich Hausler (Gerolsteiner) and former world champion Mario Cipollini (Rock Racing). Hausler finished second on Stage 1, and his consistent performance today gave him the points jersey lead by one point over Juan Jose Haedo (CSC). The German rider, who was born in Australia, said the chaos of the sprint was only made easier because of the long straight finish.

"Around the last corner I was pretty far back so I was pretty lucky that the last part was straight and that it was such a long distance to the finish," said Hausler. "It was so hectic, there were riders going everywhere and pushing and shoving because of the rain. I was lucky that I got a gap in the last 300 metres and just came through."

Even though Boonen has a big following worldwide, Cipollini has his own share of the cheers. The 41 year-old showed today that he can keep up with guys nearly half his age, and even best most of them. "For me it was a very difficult sprint and I couldn't express my max power so it was challenging from that point of view," said the 'Lion King'. "I didn't even know my position at one point so I had to use my experience a little bit."

"It wasn't me who opened a gap in the sprint to Cavendish," he added. "At that point I didn't feel like I should stay in the front or I would lead out the sprint to everyone else. So I sat up on my bike a little bit and let some of the other guys pass me a little bit."

The only choice for the most aggressive rider on the day was BMC's Scott Nydam, keeping the honour with the team for the second day in a row. "I guess the goals today were to feed off of what we accomplished yesterday," said Nydam. "We have three strong riders who are in good position for the GC. I woke up in the morning and I felt good."

Nydam said his familiarity with the area gave him an advantage when attacking. "I know the climate and I've ridden these road dozens of times this winter so I knew what to expect for the first fifty kilometres. As soon as we hung a right onto Bennett Valley Road I went through the corner first, got a bit of a gap and just kept going."

BMC's Jackson Stewart defended his lead in the King of the Mountains competition with two third places, leading the field over the climbs. With two most aggressive and two KOM stage leads, BMC is certainly earning its entry into the race.

Regarding the weather stage winner Boonen said he actually prefers April in Belgium to today's weather in North California. "Actually the Belgium weather is better, at least it's a warm rain!" he said. "The weather always affects the race. There are always some crazy guys who try to pass on the descent. There is always something to worry about and it's stressful."

"Especially when there is a bunch sprint like today it is more difficult to stay safe and stay up right to do the sprint," continued the Tour of Qatar winner. "I don't like the rain, not at all, its not that I'm not good at it but I don't like it. I like to win but I don't like to win in the rain."

But regardless of the weather, one look at tomorrow's stage profile told Boonen everything he needed to know. "If the weather is the same tomorrow then that is not so good. But I can tell you that it won't matter for me because I'm going to be dropped. I will put my rain coat on and go to the descent and stay warm to the finish line."

How it unfolded

The riders assembled back in yesterday's finish town of Santa Rosa for the start, but under completely different weather conditions. Cold and rain greeted the race entourage, with most riders hunkering down inside their team busses with the heat on until the last possible minute.

As the race rolled out in the neutral section it was a steady diet of clothing being passed from team cars to riders. Finally, Scott Nydam (BMC) got the action moving with an attack in the first five kilometres. Slipstream's Steven Cozza thought about joining Nydam but then returned to the field, possibly thinking it better to support team-mate Tyler Farrar who was sitting just two seconds off the overall lead.

Nydam began his solo ride while behind Johnny Sundt (Kelly Benefits Strategies-Medifast) decided to try and bridge up. For the next 20 km the two grew their leads, but separately as Sundt was never able to fully bridge the gap.

Up to the first KOM, the tough Trinity Grade climb, Nydam held a six minute advantage on the field and three minutes on Sundt in no-man's land. As the field climbed the steep and twisty KOM a female fan on the side of the road held a sign saying "Marry me Cipo!" while wearing a wedding veil.

Up to the second KOM, Nydam's lead began to shrink as Sundt realized he was never going to make it across. Sundt held on long enough to take the second place points and then waited for the field.

On the flats it was the field slowly deciding when to reel Nydam back in. But for Slipstream, all attention was on the time bonuses available at the two intermediate sprints heading towards Sacramento. Farrar was able to take third in the first sprint, putting him only one second behind Cancellara, and then second for the final intermediate, giving him two seconds and the race lead.

Coming into the finish, on the second of three finishing circuits, CSC's top sprinter and yesterday's stage winner Juan Jose Haedo flatted - and showing the team's willingness to relenquish the race lead, Cancellara stopped and gave Haedo his rear wheel. Haedo still managed to finish fifth in the sprint despite having to chase during the final lap.

Tomorrow's third stage is what everyone has been talking about and looking forward to, with a tough hors category climb up Mt. Hamilton to the Lick Observatory, as well as the now well-known Sierra Road climb, close to the finish in San Jose.
