Dominguez returns to speedster form

Slow open with fast finish in Missouri

Ivan Dominguez (Toyota-United) showed today that he is completely back to his fast form after a mid-season injury sidelined him. The Cuban sprinter came from nowhere to the front in the closing metres to win the first stage and the first leader's jersey of the Tour of Missouri.

"I was getting cramps on the circuits and I told the boys not to save themselves for me," Dominguez said, admitting the team did not know there was such a tough climb on the circuits. "I was expecting a flat circuit. I was a little worried that we didn't have enough riders at the end but we had discovery up there doing a lot of the work."

"I was losing places on the climb and was almost in last position at one point. I was not expecting to win the race today. Coming out of the last corner I was in fortieth wheel and I did not expect to pass so many guys so fast. I realized it was a long way but I said to myself, 'I'm going to try!'"

While seeing Dominguez on the top step is not a surprise for many, even with his injuries of the past, a real surprise was seeing Zack Bell of the Symmetrics team in second place. "I felt really good coming into the last lap and I was able to save my legs for the last half of the race. Going down the last hill there was a lot of traffic so in the last three hundred meters I went on my own. I decided to go early when I saw an opening with three or four hundred meters to go. I saw a bit of a shadow behind me with fifty meters to go so I knew that one of those fast guys would behind me that it would be tough to hold them off."

With so many other top races going on around the world this week, this race is giving a lot of smaller teams a chance at racing on a bigger stage. "I think our role in a race like this, being one of the smaller teams, is to go for stage wins or stage podiums," said Bell. "With the stages being flatter we can have a bigger part in the race. We are going to take the opportunities as they present themselves. As the week goes on we will formulate a strategy and I think that is what a lot of other teams are waiting for as well."

As is typical for a relatively flat opening stage like this, a break did get away and rode for much of the race before being caught in the finishing circuits. Tyler Wren (Colavita-Sutter Home) launched a counter attack that became the main break when he was followed by Philipp Mamos (Team Sparkasse), James Meadley (Jelly Belly), Tim Johnson (Health Net-Maxxis), Valery Kobzarenko (Navigators Insurance).

"Riding in the break was pretty hard," said Wren. "We were all working really hard because it was windy and the rollers really got to us -- they took a lot out of all of us. When we got onto the circuits the break started to fall apart a little bit."

With the stage win, Dominguez becomes the race leader -- and with another flat stage scheduled for tomorrow, it is possible for him to wear it into the race's only time trial on Thursday. "It is nice to start the race having both jerseys," he said. "These kinds of stage races are hard and normally we go for intermediate points. But I knew I wasn’t going for the intermediate points today. I came to this race with just one bullet so I had to save it for the end."

"I would like to keep the leaders jersey for as many stages as I can. Today was a nice stage and a couple of rollers that made it hard. Tomorrow is a little bit of a longer stage and that will be hard but I would like to keep it after tomorrow, at least."

How it unfolded

The inaugural Tour of Missouri set off from just south of Kansas City in the Country Club Plaza neighborhood and headed north towards downtown. As the race climbed to the centre of the city, office workers took a brief respite from their mundane cubicle world and lined Main Street to watch the race go by. After cresting the hill the race descended to the Missouri river before heading out on the main race route.

Out on open interstate-wide roads, where the wind whipped around the riders, the attacks finally came off the front. Bernardo Colex Tepoz (Tecos-Trek), Glen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance), Jackson Stewart (BMC), and Sheldon Deeny (US National Development) started the first move of the day. Of course, it did not last long as everyone was fresh and eager to make the break. The first KOM of the day was merely a bigger version of the rolling hills that made up the entire course. Jeff Louder (Health Net p/b Maxxis) led followed by Darren Lill (Navigators Insurance) Rubens Bertogliati (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Jesse Anthony (Kodakgallery-Sierra Nevada) and David Vitoria (BMC).

Gregorio Ladino (Tecos-Trek) was easily the most active rider of the first half of the race, launching attack after attack. Though he did not make the main break of the day, his relentless attacking launched a counter attack that became the main break. Tyler Wren (Colavita-Sutter Home) was followed by Philipp Mamos (Team Sparkasse), James Meadley (Jelly Belly), Tim Johnson (Health Net-Maxxis), Valery Kobzarenko (Navigators Insurance).

And on the long straight roads away from north Kansas City, with the wind beginning to blow, the field said good-bye as it limped along at just 14 mph. Discovery Channel was unable to patrol the front of the race in the first half as one of the team leaders, Levi Leipheimer, had multiple mechanicals today, including a front flat and a broken chain.

The leading five rolled along working well together and built a lead of more than five minutes at the top end of the course, near Platte City, before turning back and riding the same course back towards Kansas City -- making for a lollipop-style course. Jackson Stewart (BMC) tried to cross the gap for many kilometres, but eventually decided it wiser to sit and wait for the sleeping peloton.

Eventually, after the loop turn around and with all their riders on working bicycles, Discovery Channel took up the role of chasers -- as is customary for the strongest team in the race to do. Their effort brought the gap to under five minutes, but was paused as the race entered the feed zone. With lunch bags put away the chase was back on.

Later on it was Slipstream-Chipotle upping the pace in place of Discovery Channel, with both teams looking to keep the time gaps to a minimum for their time trial specialists later in the week.

Back across the Missouri River the gap was around two minutes, and the break looked to be able to survive to at least the three, 5 mile finishing circuits.

The finishing circuits were the highlight of the day's racing -- running both directions on a wide boulevard style road with a large grassy stretch in the middle. Thousands of fans crowded along, watching the race go by on one side, then running like a cresting wave across to the other.

Two laps to go

With three laps to go the break began to disintegrate, with Johnson attacking to keep his sprinter Karl Menzies from having to do any work in the closing peloton. Kobzarenko was still working with Johnson while the German Mamos sat on. Behind it was BMC now putting their team on the front with Slipstream amassing as well.

With one lap to go, and the break caught, it was on for the sprinters... except for a momentary attack at 5km by Sergey Lagutin (Navigators Insurance) which was covered by George Hincapie. After this was reeled in, the sprinters finally breathed a sigh of relief and the tactics began. But of course, one rider had to try to spoil it all in the final kilometre -- this time it was Ryder Hesjdal (Health Net-Maxxis) dangling off the front.

The pace was high off the small descent into the final turn-around with 400 metres to go to the line. No clear organization seemed to be present, including Health Net, which had Pipp countering Hesjdal's move into the final turns. Pipp tried to keep it going for the line but was caught and out of the scrum it was Ivan Dominguez taking another big win on the season.

Tomorrow's stage is the first point-to-point from Clinton to Springfield, with two intermediate sprints and no KOM climbs. Tune into Cyclingnews' live coverage tomorrow starting at 11:00 a.m. central US time.
