Roulston breaks 17 year drought

Ashburton's Hayden Roulston successfully defended his Tour of Southland title today to become the first rider in 17 years to win the race back-to-back. The Trek Zookeepers rider finished back in the pack during the final stage from Winton to Te Anau this afternoon, happy in the knowledge he could not be pushed out of the yellow jersey.
United States rider Thomas Zirbel gained his second stage win of the Tour, and the fourth overall for Glen Mitchell's Bissell Pro Cycling team, when he sprinted across the finish line in Gala St. Southland Times' Aaron Strong was second in the stage, with Joe Chapman (Creation Signs) third. Strong was left ruing an error in judgment when he wrongly assumed he was on the last lap around Queens Park, only to find out as he crossed the line that there was still a lap to go. Most the attention, however, was on the strong performance from Roulston. His winning gap was 1min 30sec over Marc Ryan, with Logan Hutchings third at 2min 49sec.
Only eight other riders have won multiple Southland tours in the race's 51 year history, among them Roulston's Trek Zookeepers team-mate Gordon McCauley. Only three had previously gone back-to-back - Stephen Cox 1981/82, Jack Swart 1983/84 and Brian Fowler 1985 to 1992. Roulston, a former Discovery Channel rider, is now eyeing a return to professional action in Europe, although he could not say with which team.
Karl Murray tried his utmost to unseat Miles Watson in the sprint ace classification, but in the end Watson was able to do enough to retain the green jersey. In the other classifications, Jeremy Yates (Subway) held onto the King of the Mountains jersey while Clinton Avery was the tour's leading junior. Colour Plus had some consolation for losing the yellow jersey to Roulston midway through the tour when it won the team's classification with four riders in the top 10.
