Discovery Channels a win

The Discovery Channel Cycling Team scored first at the 2007 Tour of Qinghai Lake as Allan Davis took a bunch sprint in Stage 1 on Saturday.
Starting in the capital of Qinghai Provence, Xining and riding to 3200m during the day, the riders headed towards the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. As the race headed along smooth highway riding several attempts to form a break group in the early kilometres were pulled back by the bunch, and the peloton remained at a steady pace until the base of the days gradual climb when 3 riders Krzysztof Miara (Intel-Action), Clement Lhotellerie (Skil-Shimano) and Jin Long (Skil-Shimano) made a brave attempt and broke free. Discovery Channel took on their role as the race's dominant team and controlled the pace.
The altitude began to take affect as the riders neared the summit at 3445m with several riders falling of the back. With 65km to go the beak was caught by the bunch when Floris Goesinnen (Skil-Shimano) broke away and tried in vain to stay away but was inevitably caught.
With 40km to go a large group broke away which included Davis and Askari Hossein (Giant Asia). The break worked together to confirm there escape and as the magnificent Qinghai Lake came into view they would know there were nearly home.
Davis took a fairly easy win as a delighted crowd looked on. "My legs were feeling fine, but I could really feel my lungs" said Davis after the stage.
Discovery Channel now wears the yellow and sprinter's jersey (Davis), the Asian rider jersey (Li Fuju). Floris Goesinnen's (Skil-Shimano) work at the front of the race was not in vain though as he is now the holder of the KOM jersey.
