As many riders expected and predicted, a breakaway group got away early and built an insurmountable lead on the rest of the field, similar to last year. But unlike last year the group was quite large, consisting of eighteen riders representing all fourteen teams in the race. After the lead was secure the group dwindled into a final five, with the strong Tasmanian sprinter Karl Menzies (Australia-UniSA) able to outsmart and out power the rest to take out the first stage and pull on the leader's jersey ahead of Martin Elmiger (Ag2R) and Lars Bak (Team CSC).

"I knew it was a straight run and you could see the finish all the way with the count down," said Menzies "Dave was in my ear pumping me up the whole way saying, 'You can take these blokes!' giving me a bit of confidence."

Menzies was up against quite a ProTour crew in the final group of five with former Swiss champion Elmiger, Bak, Matthew Lloyd (Predictor-Lotto), and Gustav Larsson (Unibet.com). "You knew everyone was just foxing, trying to get away," said Menzies. "Lloyd got away from us so I swung off as if I was letting them go, but then I hit them and got through Lloyd. I saw the Ag2R dude coming after me, but then I went up a gear and there was no way he was going to get me."

A modest Menzies, who held the leader's jersey at the Herald Sun Tour last October racing for the American pro continental Health Net team, said that he did not come to this race with any expectations riding for such a strong composite team. "To come here you have no expectations. We have such a class team, so it's all about representing them blokes and Australia-UniSA. It was the furthest thing from my mind to win a stage even, so I am really ecstatic."

But teammate Matt White said that Karl is a little keen on keeping the jersey. "It depends on how much the time gaps are but he definitely wants to win the tour," he told Cyclingnews. "Menzies is a strong boy! He's probably the best one to have up there; he probably has the best form of all of us." When asked if there is any difference in defending a lead on a composite team, White replied, "We all know our job and when you ride for a national team there is a bit of pride in the jersey. We are all happy to see Karl win. It's going to be a long week, and definitely now for us!"

Defending race winner Simon Gerrans was ever the professional, content to see teammate Martin Elmiger up the road in the leading group and finishing third on the day. "I'm not too disappointed; you know, that is racing."

How it unfolded

The extreme heat was not present today on the rolling terrain through South Australia's beautiful wine country. And for a change, the peloton got to spend most of the day enjoying the scenery with every team represented in the main break of the day. "It was a bit of an anti-climax," said Credit Agricole's Julian Dean. "Everyone was racing there in the beginning but then that group got away and the peloton just sat-up. So it wasn't particularly hard since they had the right combination of riders in the front." But early on, the racers did not waste any time in trying to get the breaks formed, knowing that races like this are usually decided in the first stages. "The usual story," joked Matthew Lloyd after the stage. "As I said before, for a shorter tour like this it happens like this."

The first attack on the day came from Australia-UniSA in the form of Brett Aiken who got away just eight kilometers into the race. Gordon McCauley (New Zealand National Team) and an aggressive Gene Bates (South Australia.com - AIS) joined him, followed later by Nicholas Roche (Credit Agricole) and Matt Goss (Team CSC). But a tricky little unrated climb early on saw the demise of the early break. The descent of that climb was fast enough to launch a counter attack but still to no avail. It was not until the only rated climb of the day, up Humbug Scrub, that a real break formed.

A group of ten riders quickly became eighteen as every team tried to get at least one rider in the break. Elmiger, Bak, Lloyd, Menzies and Larsson were obviously in the break along with Juan Miguel Mercado (Agributel), Luke Roberts (Team CSC), Mario Aerts (Predictor-Lotto), Yarnick Talabardon (Credit Agricole), Elia Rigotto (Milram), Nicolas Crosbie and Andy Flickinger (Bouygues Telecom), Serge Pauwels (Chocolade Jacques), Glen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance), Paolo Longo Borghini (Barloworld) and the only rider eligible for best young rider, Simon Clarke (South Australia.com - AIS).

The group rolled through with a quick tempo as the peloton shut off the gas and went about normal conversations. As the gap grew to six minutes, one lone rider, Clinton Avery (New Zealand National Team) jumped out of the peloton with more than 100 kilometers to go; but with no other riders brave (or foolish) enough to go with him. Undaunted, the tall mountain biker decided to march ahead solo, sitting almost exactly half-way between the break and peloton for most of the remaining kilometers.

As the kilometers ticked off the temperature increased somewhat, likely aiding to the increasing time gap. When it reached around fourteen minutes the gap started to hold, and the leading riders became itchy about the finish. A few teams had two riders each, including CSC and Predictor-Lotto. "The Lotto team had two and CSC had two riders, so they were pulling harder than the other guys," said Elmiger. And the closer they got to the finish, the less cohesive they got. "Typical with twenty riders and so much time on the front, nobody wanted to work too much," he continued. "So it was important to go hard at the end to stay on the front."

The big pressure came from CSC with strongman Lars Bak and Australian Luke Roberts, who has shown good form recently. "We tried to put pressure on the guys at the end because it was quite easy just rolling through in the group," said Roberts. "We decided to put a bit of pressure on to split things up. A lot of guys then started to follow us around! Lars Bak was great though, he made the split but unfortunately I couldn't get there. So I got stuck behind in a group and tried to jump across a bit later. I almost got there but not quite."

The split took the group of eighteen down to ten and then down to five, with splintered riders regrouping behind. "I actually attacked a guy and got to a group of three," said Menzies about making the final selection. "Then the group came across and I just came over the top when the actual split went - otherwise I wouldn't have been there in the end."

The final five together in the final five kilometers started playing tactics, with the next group just under twenty seconds behind. But the long fast run-in to the finish ensured they would stay away. The first to go was Matthew Lloyd. "I had a go with a kilometer to go because Karl is one of the best sprinters out there," said Lloyd about his early sprint. "I knew that the other guys were good too."

But the other guys were not good enough for the bloke they call Ten Menzies, who powered away with enough gap to sit up and enjoy the victory.

Menzies and the rest of the field knows there is a lot of racing still to go, with only a minute separating the top ten riders. Riders like Luke Roberts are happy to have made the major break for their team, but know the road ahead. "Form is okay obviously, but I was still pretty tired in the end. It was a tough day. I think we are set with a top ten so I am happy, but there are still a lot of hard days to go," said Roberts

For Menzies on the podium, thinking about winning a stage being the furthest thing from his mind takes a back seat to defending the leader's jersey. "Who knows, we'll have to talk about it - but that is the furthest thing from my mind at the moment!"
