Stage 13 - Friday, May 25: Biella - Santuario Di Oropa (Mountain TT), 12.6 km

Complete live report

Live commentary by Gregor Brown

Live coverage starts: 14:30 CEST
Estimated finish: 17:25 CEST

14:33 CEST
Hello and welcome to Cyclingnews' live coverage of stage 13. Short, steep and tough, Friday's uphill time test from the textile city famous for Ermengildo Zegna's fine wool fabrics will be unlucky for some riders after Thursday's tough mountain stage. Uphill all the way, Stage 13 gains 734m at an average grade of 5.8% and the steepest pitches of 13%.

This is a tough climb but the short distance will limit the time differences between the Giro contenders, and it's a perfect opportunity for Cunego and Simoni to take some time back from Di Luca if they can. Watch out for 21 year-old Andy Schleck to make his mark in the uphill TT as well.

The first riders are already off, starting with American Olson. We will give you an update on them in the coming minutes.

14:45 CEST
Tinkoff, like on road stages, is being aggressive in the early part of the stage. It riders lead the top two spots. Rovny holds to top spot with the only sub 32' time.

A winner will be hard to select for today's stage. The first two kilometres are flat, leaving only 10.5 kilometres of climbing. It is a stage that will favour an explosive climber. Maybe Iban Mayo? He seemed to take a back seat yesterday, perhaps saving his strength for today? Di Luca showed strong and could be propelled by the Maglia Rosa.

14:52 CEST
The average speed of Ivan Rovny was 23.637 km/h.

14:55 CEST
Aaron Olson (T-Mobile) went off at 13.45 this morning. The riders are going off at one minute intervals, except for the final 16, who will be separated by two minutes.

15:25 CEST
This mountain time trial is to remember Marco Pantani's win in the 1999 race. That year, the Italian climber won the stage to Oropa ahead of Laurent Jalabert and Gilberto Simoni while wearing the leader's maglia rosa. Today's stage covers the 12.6km and 734m of climbing from Biella to Oropa.

A mountain time trial was planned for the 2006 Giro, going up to Madonna del Ghisallo but the organizers, RCS Sport, were forced to scratch the stage because it conflicted with the final day's stage to Milan. For the 2007 edition, RCS reportedly wanted to have a mountain time trial in Toscana, climbing the Passo della Futa, but due to logistical problems finding parking space at the finish it was cancelled in favour of a "normal" stage to Scarperia.
