Juan Jose Haedo (Team CSC) came close to a stage win in yesterday's fast downhill field sprint, but could not make it past Freddie Rodriguez (Predictor-Lotto.) However, the tables were turned in today's final stage as the last 250 metres tilted upwards, with Haedo powering past Rodriguez and Sergey Lagutin (Navigators Insurance) to add another win to his growing palmares.

"It was really tough in the last few hundred metres and I had to make sure I found the right wheel," Haedo told Cyclingnews. "I was in fourth wheel with one hundred metres to go and I knew that was pretty good because of the way the sprint worked out. It was still hard to pass Freddie and I think he went for too long but that is the way he plays. He had a perfect position for yesterday and went a little too early today."

Holding on for third place, behind Rodriguez and Haedo, was a non-traditional sprinter Lagutin. "I had the right position - the team put me in great position right on Freddie's wheel," he said. "But in the end the other guys were stronger. I did what I could but the other two were much faster."

Coming in fourth was Toyota-United's Ivan Dominguez who just could not find the right timing this week in the sprints. "It was fast and hard," he said about the sprint finish. "I lost my guys in the last turn. The guy in front of J.J. locked his rear wheel and J.J. almost crashed. From there Caleb went down - he was in the right place for me but I had to go then. Yesterday I waited too long, today I went too soon."

"Someone locked their wheels up going through there and when me and Vogels came through there we had nowhere to go but straight into the gutter, over the handlebars and into the crowd," said Dominguez's teammate Caleb Manion. "The crash wasn't so bad but I was disappointed because I had good legs but I couldn't help Dominguez and the boys out for a win."

Even though Haedo told Cyclingnews earlier in the morning that the team goal was not to defend the points jersey, a small breakaway during the race ate up the three intermediate points - meaning that Haedo would only have to place within one place of Rodriguez in the finish. CSC also was clearly not working for the time bonuses that could vault second place overall Christian Vandevelde over Discovery Channel's Janez Brajkovic, with Vandevelde doing a lot of work to bring back the breakaways.

"I was fortunate enough to get into that break in the last minute and take advantage of a good opportunity," said Vandevelde about stage three. "I had to play the biggest card that I had for this race and get on the podium. My team supported me one hundred percent after that and it was frustrating not being able to make back time. But luckily we have such a stud in J.J. to be able to pull of a win for us today!"

Still, the second overall is an impressive result for the American, who did not exactly have fond memories of cycling in Atlanta. "I would lie if I said I didn't have bad memories about riding around here. I was about to quit the sport after going to the Olympics and not making the team - it was really hard. We were a close knit group and there was a lot of pressure being in Atlanta. It is crazy how I used to live back then with my 12 dollar per diem and eating burrito's four times a day!"

But the man of the race was the young Slovenian rider Janez Brajkovic, who claimed his first win as a professional and this race's best young rider jersey for the second time. "For me personally this is a great success in my career so far and I am extremely happy," he said. "I wasn't even planning to be here so it is an amazing victory. To win this race by myself it would have been impossible. But with the team we had here they were amazing and did a lot of work in the last few days. I have to say thank you to them for helping me. For our team it is a great victory being a race in America racing for an American team, it is like winning a Spanish race for a Spanish team."

Also claiming an overall jersey was Health Net-Maxxis' Ryder Hesjedal in the KOM. "We had some good efforts and a perfect race with out actually having a victory," he said. "I'm really happy to have this jersey after a hard race like this. It was all I could do to be happy with the race after having no GC hope. I wanted to be able to be as impressive as I could on the Brasstown Bald stage to show what I was capable of on the hardest day of the race. Now I can look at the race and be happy with it."

The most aggressive rider of the week, voted on by the entire media, was Glen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance) for his persistent presence in breakaways. The most aggressive rider on the day was Cesar Grajales, who rode in the day's main breakaway of the day with Kirk O'Bee (Health Net-Maxxis) and Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health). Grajales, who crashed the other week at Redlands, rode the entire week with a separated shoulder, often wearing his right arm in a sling. "I came to do the race but I knew I wasn't going to be a contender for the GC. I wanted to do something for my team and come to race and finish."

But the main problem in today's hot day was the inability for Grajales to take any water hand-ups. "We had to grab the bottles for feeding from the right and I couldn't because of my separated shoulder. So that made today really hard."

How it unfolded

The group picks up the pace

The nearly 12 kilometre race course was quite a departure from the long rolling hills and smooth roads of northern Georgia for the first six stages. But the positive side of riding on an urban course, for many laps, was that the crowds, which were larger than the other stages, would see much more action.

Nine laps of a twisting and turning urban course, combined with a fast-moving peloton, all but assured things would end in a field sprint. Many attacks came and went as the group topped 60 kilometres per hour at times. Finally three riders seemed determined to spoil it for the sprinters: Cesar Grajales (Jittery Joes), Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health) and Kirk O'bee (Health Net-Maxxis.) This was the break that finally managed to get away from the field - though never for very long.

Back in the field, the rough roads caused problems for more than a few riders, including race leader Brajkovic, who flatted with about 30 kilometres to go. Discovery Channel teammate Brian Vandborg immediately tried to swap his rear wheel with the race leader, but the change was not smooth. Luckily, the team dropped riders back to pace. "In a few seconds the whole team was at the back of the peloton waiting for me," he said. "It wasn't a problem and we were back up to the front of the group in a matter of minutes."

Another rider, Ben Jacques-Maynes, suffered the same fate as Brajkovic, but did not have the good fortune of having a team waiting for him - only his two fellow break riders, with little more than two minutes separating them from the peloton. Even though Mavic was quickly on the scene, the chase in the back was in full swing, and he was swallowed up a few kilometres later.

With less than two laps to go the catch was in sight, with Grajales and O'Bee burying themselves to the end. But it was not to be and the field had them within twenty-five metres crossing the line with one lap to go. At that moment, David Millar surprisingly attacked the peloton, bringing a few opportunistic riders with him. "I was thinking of going for the sprint, but then thought even if I have an exceptional sprint I will be lucky to get third. So I'll attack to see what happens."

Millar bridged up to the two break riders with Tom Danielson (Discovery Channel), Tim Johnson (Health Net-Maxxis) and Timmy Duggan (Slipstream-Chipotle.) "Millar attacked going into the start/finish and I got on a guy going after him," said Johnson. "We picked up the break a couple of kilometres later. Then it was just full throttle - these guys go pretty fast. 'Sparky' Danielson just stood up and zipped along - that helped us hold off the pack for a little while."

The final podium

Even with new life, the break was finally reeled in by CSC at about five kilometres to go. "It lasted a while - if we just had one or two strong guys we might have made it," said Millar. "Danielson was really strong - it was really just me and him."

The field then had to reorganize quickly, with two 90 degree turns in the final two kilometres, with the last one off-camber at 1.5 km. That is where the trouble occurred, with the high speeds of the sprint not mixing well with the downward-sloping turn. A few riders were taken down, but most of the field made it through, including the sprint favourites. The long flat drag past the one kilometre flag made it even more dramatic, as the field dove across to the inside barriers. Rodriguez took an inside line behind the TV moto, swinging to the middle at 250 metres when the road really kicked up.

Behind him was Lagutin, grimacing from the effort. But on the right side was Haedo, moving too fast for the others to catch.
