Stevic's studies pay off with Rome win

The Tour de Georgia has finished in Rome every year since the race's inception, and almost every time the winning move comes on the final push up Clocktower Hill. Even though Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United) had never raced the Tour de Georgia, he and his team studied the history and knew to be on the front for this decisive moment. The Serbian national champion jumped off the peloton at the right moment to take the win away from the rest of the sprinters.

"I remembered last year when Popovych jumped and that was one of the things that we were planning," said Stevic. "We were not sure if we were going to do it because Ivan [Dominguez] had great form and our best card to play was with him in a sprint. But I got the green light from the team to follow the moves with Caleb [Manion] at the end and to put all my cards on the table. It went pretty good because Caleb took me all the way to the [Clocktower] and went up it about 50 metres more really hard."

"I knew he was on my wheel the last lap - and he was better than me so I thought I would look after him," Manion told Cyclingnews after the race. "I knew this finish pretty well and I saw Popovych do it last year so I made sure I got him to the bottom of the steep climb and gave him a sling-shot - you only need five metres at the top of the climb and all of a sudden you are gone!"

A frustrated Freddie Rodriguez (Predictor-Lotto) suffered from deja vú in the finale. "This reminded me exactly of last year!" he said. "The attack went in the same place and I was third then and I was third today!"

Stevic's former teammate Juan Jose Haedo (Team CSC) knew to be where Stevic was, but found himself a few too many riders behind at the key moment. "I tried to stay in a good position but he did what Popovych did last year. I thought it might come back but it didn't. I was a little farther back from where I should have been, like top ten. I went into the top three over the top but he was already gone."

Stevic had tried to win here before, but ran into visa problems last year. "I missed [the race] last year because I had a problem with my visa and had to go back to Serbia. This year I missed the Tour of California because I got sick. I was really hoping to do this race because I have missed the big races in the last two years. I knew I had a chance and that today I felt really good."

Tucked safely into the peloton was race leader Daniele Contrini (Tinkoff Credit Systems) who will wear the yellow jersey another day. "We sat back a little today to protect the leaders jersey," he said. "We wanted to keep time gap close enough but we didn't have to do much of any work because there were other teams interested in keeping the time gap down too."

The main breakaway of the day, consisting of Austin King (Jittery Joe's), Glen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance) and Garrett Peltonen (Priority Health) did come away with a few prizes - with King taking the most aggressive rider award and Chadwick winning the $1,000 intermediate sprint.

How it unfolded

A nearly cloudless sky greeted the riders for the second stage - departing from the courthouse square of the small town of Thomaston, Georgia. A stiff breeze was blowing into the riders for the opening kilometres but not nearly as strong as yesterday's massive tailwind. The headwind slowed the peloton down to around 15 miles per hour at first as the riders stretched their legs and warmed up. But it was not too long before the attacks of the smaller domestic teams awoke the field.

Like yesterday it was Adam Bergman (Colavita-Suter Home) starting things off followed by numerous attacks and counterattacks by Priority Health, Jitter Joe's and BMC. It was not until 16 miles into the race that anyone got away to a lead greater than 15 seconds. This time it was Austin King (Jittery Joe's) who rolled off a counter attack to gain a lead. "There were a bunch of little attacks about 16 miles into the race," said King. "It was early and I just held the move and got a gap. Chadwick and Pelton came across and helped out to give us a further gap." Soon after he was joined by Garrett Peltonen (Priority Health) and Glen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance) and the peloton seemed content to let them have their fun.

The lead quickly ballooned to more than two minutes as the peloton sat in for a long afternoon ride. While King was quite active yesterday, and Chadwick known for long breakaway efforts, Peltonen was a surprise, having suffered injuries in yesterday's stage. "We needed someone in the break, and Austin went followed by Chadwick, so I just went with them - not really thinking what I was in for!" Peltonen chuckled. "It was hard and windy. The profile looked flat but it definitely wasn't, going up and down all day. We thought maybe we could get the KOM jersey at the end of the day. At least my bandages made me look tough out there!"

The trio found a nice rhythm along the rolling countryside, with King doing a lot of work driving the break in the early kilometres. Fifty kilometres into the race the break had almost ten minutes on the field, still working somewhat seamlessly. It was not until the first sprint line in Newnan, which carried an additional $1000 prime, that any real action occurred. Chadwick and King gave a little extra effort with Chadwick, a little more rested, pipping him on the line.

At this point the peloton, mainly led by Tinkoff Credit Systems, started to get a little realistic about things. Discovery Channel put a couple of riders up on the front to push the pace and bring the break a little closer. "We tried to keep the situation under control," said Discovery's Viatcheslav Ekimov, now a team director. "We are looking forward to Thursday and Friday - the TT and Brasstown. This is a long race and we know we are favourites - the rest of the peloton is watching us." Also joining in the chase was Toyota-United, obviously hoping to set up either of the Ivans, Dominguez or Stevic, in the final sprint.

Back in the peloton, along a wide portion of road, a touch of wheels near the middle of the peloton sent a few riders to the ground, including BMC's Mike Sayers. While all of the riders were able to continue, Sayers eventually abandoned a few kilometres later.

As the time gaps came back smaller and smaller, Chadwick started pulling longer on the front. "It was a long day. I took it easy while we got the time right out and then when the time started to come down I started really riding." King also kept pushing the pace as the time gaps seemed to shrink slower than the kilometres ticked off - giving the break a glimmer of hope for holding on.

"Everyone was working well in the break," said King. "It was a perfect group to be in. The gap slowly started to come down at the end but we continued working. The last point sprint the break went down to two guys on the big rollers coming into the finish. I got split off at that point. We are all opportunists and are riding really tough out there. We are going to stay aggressive all week and really try to stay apart of the race."

As the breakaway neared the second sprint line, just 42 kilometres from the finish in Rome, the peloton loomed at about two-and-a-half minutes. As King and Chadwick sprinted for points, Peltonen fell off the pace. Ten kilometres later, after pulling one too many times, it was King trying to hold Chadwick's wheel, rocking all over his machine. But one of the frequent kilometre-long rolling hills finally did him in, leaving the half-Aussie, half-Kiwi to fend for himself.

"I lost King at the end so I just tried to get to the KOM," said Chadwick. "But Health Net and Slipstream were chasing hard and got me about a kilometre before the climb."

Health Net-Maxxis had six of its riders driving the peloton, trying to get someone over Clocktower hill the first time - the only time KOM points were awarded. However, Ben Jacques-Maynes trumped their train to take the points and the jersey. "I was just in good position and was more looking to put our sprinter Emile Abrahms into good position too for the finish. We came around the corner and I headed into the hill in good position. Health Net lead out a really good train and I tried to figure out which one of them might go for it. But they all kind of jumped and I just floated behind them. I have ridden this hill a couple of times in past tours. I knew how to hit it this week so I came up behind them and have it a shot. I had a god gap over the top. I was surprised to have two or three bike lengths."

Numerous teams took turns controlling the front of the peloton on the two finishing circuits, beginning with Navigators Insurance. Next it was Toyota-United and CSC trying to take over, with CSC's David Zabriskie hanging off the front for about 500 meters on the second lap. Next it was Discovery Channel looking to take its third win in Rome, following in the footsteps of Armstrong and Popovych. But riding the three Discovery riders was Ivan Stevic, biding his time.

"Over the top I put it in the big ring and when I looked back I saw the other guys looking at each other and I knew that there was a big chance for me," he said. "I knew I wasn't putting our team at risk by going by myself. Basically I double our chances to win because I was there by myself and if I didn't make it in the back Ivan and Henk were there to [win.] It was perfect - I am so glad that I did it."

Stevic held his lead down the Clocktower, up and over the final little hill and all the way to the line -- at one point even surprising the TV motorcycle. "The motorcycle came really close and slowed down. I had to brake but it didn't really affect my race. I was scared a little bit in the moment but having motorcycles around is normal in a race so it is not the first time that a motorcycle has come close."
