Discovery Channel shines in TT

Discovery Channel took the time trial triple when Stijn Devolder won the 15.9 kilometre time trial four seconds ahead of Leif Hoste and 15 seconds ahead of Jurgen Van Den Broeck. Race leader Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano) defended himself with honour as he finished 8th, 36 seconds down on Devolder, but eight seconds ahead of Tom Boonen who was second overall coming into the time trial.
Devolder commented on his success after the race, "Hoste won't be annoyed at me, for sure. I was very motivated to show myself strongly here. My early season is behind me, I am only looking forward now. In the Dauphiné Libéré, I want to ensure my selection for the Tour de France."
How it unfolded
The early morning time trial saw rain drenched streets in Buggenhout, as two important fights took place. The most evident was the fight for the stage win, but just as a important fight stood between the top placed riders in the GC, none of them outstanding time trial specialists. One of the pre-race favourites, Leif Hoste, started early, and set an early good time of 19'41 over the 15.9 kilometre course. Shortly after, Ubbink's Niki Terpstra moved in as second with an even time of 20 minutes.
Next rider to move in to the top three was Jurgen Van Den Broeck (Discovery channel), who moved ahead of Terpstra with his time of 19'52, and the Discovery Channel top three became complete when Stijn Devolder shortly after put in the day's best time of 19'37.
Behind the trio, Kai Reus of Rabobank's continental team put in an impressive performance as he finished 5th, 25 seconds after Devolder, but 11 seconds ahead of race leader Tjallingii, a move that saw the young Dutchman climb to second in the GC. Tjallingii, in his turn rode an outstanding time trial and managed to put in eight seconds on Tom Boonen, almost all the time that Boonen gained thanks to his bonuses yesterday.
