Race over for all bar twenty four...

... but who will it be?

When a large group of riders went clear of the field after just 10 kilometres of racing, few would have imagined it would decide the outcome of the stage, let alone the race. But an hour and a half later, that's exactly what happened: 24 riders crossed the finish line in Rawang almost seven and a half minutes clear of the field, led home by Ceramica Panaria-Navigare neo-pro Maximiliano Richeze.

One of only a handful of riders in cycling history to take a victory on his professional debut, the 22 year-old Argentinian was naturally over the moon, and was in fact tipped by his team-mate and countryman Ruben Bongiorno as a rider to watch out for at yesterday's press conference. However, when asked to take the expectant press through the final kilometre, Richeze said he didn't see an opening until 150 metres before the line.

"When there was 500 metres to go, I was in a pretty bad position and didn't think I was going to get help because I was blocked behind a few riders," he explained. "But at around 150 metres to go, after pushing my way through a bit, I found an opening and gave it everything."

Before turning professional, Richeze notched up 11 victories in Italy during his last amateur year. Yet despite his potential, he admits he came to Malaysia to work for the team and in particular for Bongiorno. So when the question was raised about how he felt to earn a win on debut, his response wasn't in the least bit surprising: "Si, si, contento!" was the effervescent reply.

The orange armada have been the most successful team at the LTdL in recent years, with former rider Graeme Brown enjoying much success before his transfer to Rabobank in 2006. However, as well as bringing sprinters like Richeze and Bongiorno this year, Ceramica Panaria-Navigare wanted to feature in the overall classification, which once again has not happened.

"For the team as a whole, it wasn't a really good day, because the riders going for the general classification weren't there," admitted Richeze. "When we realised the break was going to stay away, we obviously began thinking about the stage win, but we weren't exactly happy with it because of the situation in terms of the overall classification."

With all the best teams represented including a swag of GC contenders - namely defending champion Ryan Cox and his team-mate David George (South Africa), Francesco Bellotti and Benoit Poilvet (Credit Agricole), Gabriele Missaglia and Walter Pedraza (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), and Cesar Grajales (Navigators Insurance) - overall honours will most likely come from one of these names, who'll be heavily protected over the coming days.

Said Cox to Cyclingnews: "Shorter stages are quite dangerous - you've got to be careful - and our plan was just for David [George] and myself to be careful and stay out of trouble and cover a couple of the moves; we saw a move go and luckily both of us were in it.

"Normally, in a stage like this and a move goes that's got six or seven minutes, it's pretty much done. Also, there's some climbers there [in the break]... I mean if you're a GC guy and you lose six or seven minutes to some climbers like us, it's going to be quite tough and you're going to end up going for stages."

One rider his South African team needs to watch out for is mountains leader Francesco Bellotti from Credit Agricole. Just 26 years old, the Italian let it be known that he wants to "do something good" and take advantage of his current position on GC.

"I think the South African guys are good - but I feel good too!" Bellotti smiled, an aura of quiet confidence surrounding him. "I felt really good on the climb but today was not a big climb; nevertheless, it was a good beginning for me."

Certainly, there's still plenty of racing yet to go and the climbing stages to the Cameron Highlands and Genting will be fiercely contested, but what is likely to unfold as the 11th Tour de Langkawi goes on is a readjustment of sorts, rather than any major reshaping of the race.

"Well, hopefully a lot of the teams will have their GC riders in front like we did," Cox said about what he envisages over the coming days.

"Selle Italia I'm sure will be keen, we're keen and there's Navigators, so already there's three teams. Stage 3's still a dangerous stage because a group normally goes on that day - and you don't want them getting a bigger gap or six minutes that equals the time again, so we don't want that to happen."

How it unfolded

Beginning at KL Tower, smack in the middle of the capital's CBD, the TM Le Tour de Langkawi entourage and its onlookers were greeted with picture perfect weather and a small herd of elephants for a relatively early start time of 9:30am. Yes, we said elephants - remember folks, we're in the tropics now!

119 riders signed on for a short 81 kilometres in the saddle - short but certainly not sweet, as by the day's end, all bar two dozen riders were forced to ride in damage control mode.

And it took just a quarter of an hour for it to happen. 10 kilometres into the race, 24 riders made their move: Erki Pütsep, Christophe Riblon (AG2R Prevoyance), Laurent Lefevre (Bouygues Telecom), Maximiliano Richeze, Sergiy Matveyev (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare), Francesco Bellotti, Benoit Poilvet (Credit Agricole), Takashi Miyazawa (Japan), Jean Claude Lebeau (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), Elio Aggiano (LPR), Cesar Grajales, Mark Walters (Navigators Insurance), Robin Sharman (Recyling.Co.Uk), Angel Vallejo Dominguez, Raul Garcia De Mateos, Jose Miguel Elias Galindo (Relax-Gam), Gabriele Missaglia, Walter Pedraza (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), David George, Ryan Cox (South Africa), Steffen Radochla, Corey Sweet, Torsten Schmidt (Wiesenhof Akud) and Wawan Setyo Budi (Wismilak).

Time checks were at first seldom from race radio, but as defending champ Ryan Cox told Cyclingnews, it was the same for the break, too: "Yeah, in the beginning, everyone seemed to drive because we didn't get a lot of time gaps, but then it went to two minutes and the next minute it was four and a half, so it seemed like everyone was keen to ride [on]."

A group of four riders sensed the danger and did try to bridge across, but with six times the horsepower up front and working well, each doing short, hard turns, the quartet stood no chance and drifted back to the peloton. Not content with an already enviable advantage and with most of the race favourites in the move, the order came from various sports directors to maintain the tempo - and that is what they did.

Wiesenhof's sprinter Steffen Radochla took the first two intermediate sprints, eagerly eyeing the sprinters' jersey that he indeed did take after finishing fourth on the stage, while the only mountain prime at Batu Arang (Cat.4, km 67.5) was comfortably won by Credit Agricole's Italian signing, Francesco Belotti, who also did enough to wear the spotted tunic on the podium.

The final sprint prime was taken by a pair of Wiesenhof fellas, this time the experienced Torsten Schmidt going 1-2 with their Australian signing Corey Sweet. By this stage, the breakaway was inside ten kilometres to go and were now enjoying an advantage approaching seven sizeable minutes.

Into the town of Rawang, 22 of the original 24 riders were still riding as one, and over the line, it was Panaria's orange blaze at the fore once again, as Maximiliano Richeze continued where Graeme Brown they left off in KL one year ago with a perfectly-timed sprint victory.
