Aggiano growing older, growing wiser

George moves closer to realising a ten year dream

If anyone thought the peloton was growing tired, they certainly weren't showing it. For the second day in succession, the battle being waged out on the roads of Malaysia was one of breakaway versus peloton, and like yesterday, it was the former that prevailed. But again, only just; today, seven seconds was the difference.

In touch and go situations like these, experience really counts, and possibly today more than ever, LPR's Elio Aggiano used all his nine years as a professional to first choose the right break, then the counter, and finally his winning move.

Weighing up his opposition, in particular the fast finish of Russell Downing, the 33 year-old took his chances in attacking his two companions with around a kilometre to go, and successfully held off the Brit and Navigators' Bernard Van Ulden to earn his tenth career victory.

With the peloton bearing down on the initial break of nine at five kilometres to go, who were holding a lead of no more than thirty seconds, Cyclingnews asked Aggiano when he started thinking about going it alone.

"It was only in the last five kilometres," he said, "because it was too far to go from twenty, and everybody in the break thought we were going to be caught, anyway.

"I thought because yesterday's stage was so hard, they'd let us ride today, but in the finale, nobody was letting anybody ride, so I had to make a decision to go."

A primary reason why the peloton didn't let the break ride was Spaniard Garcia De Mateos (Relax-Gam), who was in the move and halfway during the race had leapfrogged sixth places to virtual sixth on the overall classification, just two and a half minutes behind the yellow jersey of David George, forcing his tiring team from South Africa to chase.

"Another hard day," admitted George, his clothes drenched after a mostly rain-soaked stage.

"I don't know who was complaining about having a rest day, but it didn't seem like anybody needed a rest day today. The last two days they've really come at us and tried to break us, so credit to them - we'd do the same - but to say the guys [on my team] have ridden outstanding is not enough."

The 29 year-old paused for a moment, the dedication shown by his team bringing out beautiful but emotional feelings inside of him. "It's been amazing these last two days, and they've given everything till the last kilometre, so credit goes to them."

A little credit should also go to the team from Japan, who got on the front of the peloton in the final fifty kilometres and appeared to come to the aid of the South Africans. "No, not at all," replied George when asked if an alliance had been reached between the two teams out on the road.

"I'm not sure what their motive was, but obviously they had one and they came to the front. Every team has their motive for riding in the finale - maybe they thought they could win the stage, I'm not too sure what their intentions were - but we were just grateful to have them help."

And as each day goes on, the quietly spoken lad from Cape Town moves one step closer to achieving what has virtually been a ten-year dream for him, just as sprints classification leader Steffen Radochla (Wiesenhof Akud) begins to look all the more secure in his blue tunic.

"It's good to ride for the sprint and now we have the points also," said Radochla to Cyclingnews soon after winning the bunch sprint for fourth place, who stated he and his team were feeling a little weary after the previous day's racing.

"Today, I felt a little bit better; it was not so hot and it was a little more flat; I had a good day," he said, smiling confidently.

How it unfolded

The day began in Muar, a popular seaside town favoured by the race organisers on a number of occasions in Langkawis gone past. All on hand, including the 105 riders left in the race, took full advantage of the lush gardens and a noticeable change in temperatures, with the threat of rain likely later in the day.

Following two consecutive days of hard racing, Credit Agricole's American young gun Saul Raisin (13th overall @ 7'49) was one rider predicting a break today: "Today won't be the same, no way," he said.

"A lot of guys can't do those efforts two, three days in a row even - it's just too much. And in a ten-day stage race, you can only do so many big efforts day after day, so I think today, we're definitely going to see a breakaway. There's no way people can keep up those kind of efforts back to back."

It turned out Saul was spot on: while the quick start didn't surprise, nine riders did 17 kilometres into the 180 kilometre stage - in the move were: Yohann Gene (Bouygues Telecom), Evan Oliphant (Recyling.Co.Uk), Bernard Van Ulden (Navigators Insurance), Raul Garcia De Mateos (Relax-Gam), Russell Downing, Matt Brammeier (Great Britain), Elio Aggiano (LPR), and Sven Renders (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago).

Despite the most dangerous rider in the break, De Mateos (Relax-Gam), just one spot behind our fortune-telling friend in twelfth spot overall, 8'41 the distance between him and the maillot jaune of David George at the start of the day, the peloton's rubber band snapped around km 30 as their advantage moved rapidly upwards from 1'31 at km 25, to 4'31 at km 40, and 6'05 after 94 kilometres.

Up until this point, none of the three intermediate sprints or the Cat. 4 KOM at Yong Peng were contested, with these nine only concerned about increasing or at least maintaining their lead.

By default, it turned out to be the latter, as Spaniard De Mateos had now moved past his Relax-Gam teammate Jose Miguel Elias Galindo into virtual sixth overall, just two and a half minutes behind George.

Sensing danger, the yellow jersey began motioning his South African troops to the head of the peloton, holding the gap around six minutes. But not even heavy intermittent rainstorms could wash away the advantage or their momentum, and when the lead out to almost seven minutes at km 114, it was one of the first signs that the team from South Africa was beginning to tire.

Somewhat unusually, an intra-country alliance appeared to form, because soon after, five riders from Japan began swapping off up front with their South African neighbours, bringing the gap down to 6'10 at the 130 kilometre mark and five minutes flat another 10k later.

Back in the break, the expected attacks on the second and final KOM prime at Bandar Tengarra (km 152.8) didn't eventuate, Recycling.co.uk's Evan Oliphant cruising over the crest ahead of Gene (Bouygues Telecom) and Downing (Great Britain). In the peloton, however, who were now two and a half minutes behind and closing, it was a different story, as a pair of Josés - double-stage winner Serpa (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni) and Elias Galindo (Relax-Gam) - put in a hard acceleration near the top and gained a small advantage.

It didn't last long; with the Panaria, Credit Agricole and Wiesenhof licking their chops at thoughts of a sprint finish, the two surrendered, and 10 kilometres from the finish in Kota Tinggi, the time gap was just 45 seconds.

You lucky, lucky man.

Five kilometres later, it was down to half a minute and the nine leaders were thinking they were going to be caught. But after being away all day, total resignation wouldn't have been right, and what followed was a series of counter-attacks, first by Oliphant (Recyling.Co.Uk), then by Brammeier (Great Britain), until Elio Aggiano (LPR), Brammeier's team-mate Downing and Bernard Van Ulden (Navigators Insurance) took flight with two kilometres left to race.

Inside the kilometre kite, the experienced Aggiano weighed his chances and decided to fly the coup, which turned out to be the day's winning move, the ecstatic eye-tie crossing the line four seconds ahead of Downing and Van Ulden. Just three seconds later, sprint classification leader Steffen Radochla (Wiesenhof Akud) won the field sprint for fourth, pipping Mark Cavendish (Great Britain) and Frenchman Andy Flickinger (Bougyues Telecom) at the line.
