Haedo does the Double Up in San Luis Obispo

Landis retains lead in field sprint finish

The longest stage of the 2006 Tour of California had many breaks as the race snaked along the Pacific coast -- but in the end a field sprint ensued. And for the second time Juan Jose Haedo (Toyota-United) outfoxed some of best sprinters in the world in what he called the fastest sprint of his career. "The last three kilometers were probably the fastest three kilometers of my life!" Haedo told Cyclingnews after the stage. "I was in my eleven and I couldn't go any faster! I think we were going over 70 kph!"

The stage finish was unlike the first stage that Haedo won, a direct and narrow finish into downtown San Luis Obispo, unlike the three circuits of Santa Rosa. Complicating the finish was a tight S-curve three kilometers from the finish, and a narrow, ninety-degree turn just 200 meters from the finish. However, that turn was farther from the line that Davitamon-Lotto's sprinter Freddie Rodriguez was told. "I was told that the last corner was pretty tough and a short sprint to the finish," said Rodriguez. "It wasn't, it was actually a pretty good drag. So I came out of the corner and I knew I should have gone, but I hesitated and waited -- but Haedo came from a few meters behind and did a sling-shot and I never got up to speed. I got back on his wheel but it was too late. I was feeling great today -- not suffering at all. I just miscalculated the corner, and that cost me the race. I should have stayed on the wheel of the T-Mobile guy, let him take the corner, and then come around him. Second wheel won on this course."

The T-Mobile guy was Andre Korff, who finished third. He was trying to look after his sprinter Olaf Pollack, but ended up on his own with Pollack boxed out of the front. "Normally we work for Olaf Pollack but he didn't have the good position so I tried by myself. I was third wheel in the last turn but Haedo came inside." Korff and his teammates had their hands full today, looking after KOM leader Bernhard Kohl. Kohl took second place over the first climb behind second place Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) and then sat in as his the breakaway took the rest of the points. Teammate Andre Greipel won the final KOM to help protect his teammate's five point lead over Leipheimer. "Bernhard has a lot of points and normally he wants to get a lot of points for the KOM jersey, but it is difficult now," said Korff.

Haedo particularly benefitted from Rodriguez's poor intelligence with better counter-intelligence. "Last night we had a team meeting and we saw everything in the finish, to see what the best position would be in the finish," Haedo explained. "It worked pretty good. I came up in the corner. Before the corner I was fourth, but a couple of people braked in the last corner and I took and inside lane [in the turn.] I ended up on Fred Rodriguez's wheel and when I saw the 200 meters I knew I had to go now. I didn't wait too long because I knew the others were good."

How it unfolded

The 210 kilometer stage began in Monterey with race leader Floyd Landis (Phonak) all smiles. But that smile did not last long as those three KOM climbs loomed over the riders. "I'm happy that the long one is finished," Landis admitted. "It's difficult to control the race where it is windy along the coast -- it's easier along the flats or on the longer climbs. I have an excellent team -- they spent the whole day riding in the wind."

The early breaks did not contain any dangerous riders, but then Chris Horner (Davitamon-Lotto) decided to make things interesting and joined in the fun. This sent Phonak to work. "Chris Horner went across, and it was not good for us to have him in the breakaway," Landis said. "The break was doomed after he went in."

The stage's most aggressive rider, Lars Bak (CSC), voted on by Cyclingnews and a few other select people in the race, was present in five of the break attempts today. "It was the plan to go for a stage win, but it's not that easy with Horner in the group," Bak said. "What can you do, I tried -- if you don't try you will never win. I looked on the map and could see it was a long stage, it would be a good day to go for it. And it fits me with the small climbs."

One of the main team's responsible for bringing the breaks back in the end was Toyota-United, along with CSC and Health Net-Maxxis. "With 40 kilometers to go, Frankie and Harm got on the radio and told the guys to start chasing," Haedo explained. "We were the first to start chasing and then the other teams started helping." The final two riders of the break, Glen Chadwick (Navigators) and Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel) tried in vain to restablish the break, and even gained more than two minutes back on the field. But eventually, the sprinters had their way and the field was whole for the final fifteen kilometers. "From there we kept a couple of guys at the front. We attached to the plan. I wasn't feeling that great but I wanted to stay with the plan."

Into the finish, CSC was present at the front protecting their GC riders. "We had been told that the last three kilometers would be a bit dangerous, so we made sure that David [Zabriskie] and Bobby [Julich] would stay in the front and not lose time. Then we tried to do the sprint for O'Grady, but everybody wanted to be in the front -- a little fast and nervous."

Bak also thinks that the race might have a few more challenges up its sleeve. "Tomorrow is one climb at the end -- it will be too hard for me. I think after that climb Landis might be isolated and alone, and if Christian, Dave or Bobby have good climbing legs then they might have a change to win. I think there is still a possibility for a win. People are really suffering -- Phonak really had a hard day."

Landis also is not taking anything for granted as the race moves closer to Los Angeles. "I expect the same thing again, plenty of attacks," Landis said. "The GC is still seconds apart, and there will be attacks until the last day. We have to be flexible and at some point we will hopefully get some help from another team. As for the category one climb in tomorrow's stage, the 7.5km San Marco Pass, Landis said, "I don't know it. It doesn't appear to be hard enough or long enough like the climb two days ago. There will be some kind of selection, but the goal is to watch the dangerous guys and there are only a few of those. We may take some chances letting some other people go.

But the man of the day was Juan Jose Haedo, who said he is hearing good things in the peloton from the riders. "I'm getting a lot if compliments from the European guys, telling me I am going a good job." And the more he does here, the better the chance he will be racing against them much more often.
