Tour 2005 - from cruising ...

... to suffering

Taking the big lap - the stages of the 2005 Tour de France

Welcome to Cyclingnews' Tour de France data central. In the table below you'll find links to the details of each individual stage of the Tour, with a stage description, map and profile for each day of racing.

To do your own lap around France, jump right in to stage 1 where Cyclingnews has an exclusive preview to every stage route and profile for all 21 stages.

But if you're into suffering and just can't wait for the pain, then take a look at what the riders will encounter during the tough days in the mountains.

The route in brief

This year's Tour has fewer times trials and slightly less climbing than the 2004 edition, but Lance Armstrong says he still expects it to be won and lost in the mountains. Nevertheless, any rider aiming for the top spot will need a strong team to shepherd him through the less hilly stages.

Tour 2005 covers 3,607km, starting not with a prologue (which is always less than 8km), but a 19km individual time trial between Fromentine and l'Ile de Noirmoutier, the latter being a tiny island in the Atlantic, a popular destination for Parisians.

Once the Tour gets back on the mainland for stage 2, it heads east in clockwise direction, goes into Germany briefly, then highlights will be when the peloton hits the Alps for three tough days, then the Pyrenees, the final individual time trial in St Etienne on the penultimate day before a quick blast in the TGV into Corbeil-Essonnes, on the outskirts of Paris, for the final romp into the city and Champs Elysees.
