Menzies in yellow in Tour of Southland

Australian Karl Menzies won stage two of the Powernet Tour of Southland after a brutal two and a half kilometer slog to the finish at the summit of Bluff Hill, right at the bottom of New Zealand's South Island.
Winning the stage over Rick Reid and Glen Mitchell gave the 28 year old Tasmanian the race leader's yellow jersey. "It was really last man standing stuff on the climb.I got a bit of a gap and I just pounded away," Menzies told Cyclingnews.
Menzies' team mate in the Calder Stewart team, Canadian Eric Wohlberg punctured at the start of the climb and finished well down in the field.
Menzies said that the stage win will take the tour to the highly fancied Southland Times team. "We wanted to show them what they are up for in the next week" he said.
Mitchell was third to the top of the hill climb finish and said that he is happy enough with his position. "I've ridden the hill enough times to know that generally you don't want to go hard at the bottom." He is in second place on gc, only three seconds behind Menzies.
Last year's winner John Lieswyn hit the wall before the start of the climb and finished 33rd, leaving him in 26th position at two minutes behind on general classification.
Tomorrow the riders face a 104k ride from Invercargill to Tuatapere and in the afternoon a 88k stage from Tuatapere to Winton.
