De Goede wins in wind

Sunday's Trust House Women's World Cup Race in New Zealand's capital city was always going to be a hard one. The 124km race featured two sharp hills on each of twenty laps, as well as some tight inner-city racing. Mix in a gale force wind and a simply hard course became something altogether more challenging.

These weren't your everyday zephyrs. It was gusting to 120 kilometres an hour (around 70 mph). It was windy enough for plastic crowd pontoons to get pushed across the road; that is, until the fire service came out and tied them to traffic light posts and filled them with water.

So when Suzanne de Goede (Netherlands) and Linda Serup (Denmark) sprinted to a clear first and second place, the big crowds had reason to applaud. In these conditions, only the strong survive. Only the strongest win.

"I felt really good all day. It's not always that when you feel good you go good but today I did. I'm very happy," De Goede said.

The duo had jumped away from the much whittled-down lead bunch on the final lap. At the finish line, right in front of New Zealand Parliament Buildings, de Goede easily took the sprint. Her average speed wasn't much over 34kph.

Tina Mayolo-Pic capped off a highly successful week down under, heading in the remnants of the bunch at 10 seconds. Roll back a few hundred kilometers and the US rider was winning the opening stage of the three-day tour curtain-raiser to today's World Cup race.

The crowds had no Australasian riders on the podium to cheer but there was certainly strength in depth, from both sides of the Tasman Sea. Oenone Wood, Jenny MacPherson and Katherine Bates (Australia); and Melissa Holt and Joanne Kiesanowski (NZ) all made the top 10. Besides, with the success of today's race securing the Wellington leg of the World Cup for another three years, it's not all over.

High winds caused havoc

Perhaps inspired by the break which determined the Trust House Women's Tour of New Zealand, the race action started early. A bunch of seven, including kiwi hopes Michelle Hyland and Johanna Buick, charged off on the first lap. With the other kiwis blocking and more than a few riders hiding from the buffeting winds, the escapee's lead built up to a maximum of 3min 45. With 60km remaining, things started to look very promising for the locals.

Then at mid-race the hammer went down hard. The main field started taking 45 seconds a lap, pulling itself apart in the process. The break shrank to five, then with a couple of laps to go it got reeled in altogether Judith Arndt's rainbow jersey prominent in doing the damage. A brief respite followed, before de Goede and Serup showed their strength and held it to the end.
