T-Mobile rider Serguei Ivanov sprinted to his second win of the season on stage four of the Tour of Britain today, following up his win in the Russian road race championships at the end of June. The 30 year old proved quicker than Scotland rider Evan Oliphant, Kazuo Inoue (Bridgestone Anchor) and Paul Manning (Recycling.co.uk) inside the final 200 metres of the stage, the four having gone clear of the peloton less than five kilometres after the start in Buxton.

Oliphant and Manning both normally ride for the Recycling.co.uk team and, recognising that the 2001 Tour de France stage winner was the strongest in the break, decided to attack the Russian on the run in to the finish. Both tried to get clear but he was equal to the task, closing down each attack and then taking the sprint with ease.

Race leader Nick Nuyens came in as part of the main bunch 10 minutes and 6 seconds later, retaining his seven second advantage over CSC's Michael Blaudzun going into tomorrow's 4 kilometre time trial. Nuyens' team-mate Luca Paolini outsprinted the highly promising 20 year old fastman Mark Cavendish (Great Britain) to win the bunch gallop, and in doing so strengthened his lead in the points classification.

Welshman Julian Winn had an easy day as regards holding onto the King of the Mountains jersey, sewing up the competition when the four breakaway riders mopped up all the points on today's three third-category climbs.

Stage winner Ivanov used his experience to control the other riders. "It was a good sprint because I was looking out for the two English riders, I knew to watch them. They had started attacking 20 kilometres before the finish, after the last mountain sprint. I knew they would be together for the sprint. I noticed that they must normally have been on the same team about 60 kilometres after the start, as they had the same bikes, same clothing. It made things harder for the final.

"I tried to control the group, along with the Japanese rider. We started changing over very fast, each rider hitting the front every three or four seconds. That helped me to keep an eye on them."

When asked when he realised they could stay away, Ivanov said that he knew it early on. "I knew we had a really good chance a few kilometres after the start. I saw the parcours before the race, noticing that it was slightly downhill. I knew if we got clear, we could down it very fast. There were some attacks and then we went at just the right moment, when the bunch was easing back. We got the gap then.

"Everyone worked well during the stage. No-one was sitting back, relaxing, taking it easy. Everyone was working. The Japanese rider was also strong, we didn't wait for him or anything. He rode well, never missing a turn.

"I felt that I could win today after the first attack from our group. When the first move went with 20 kilometres to go, I was able to get it back. Then the second and third one. It was not easy, but I could bring them back. So I knew that I was strong enough."

Ivanov then described the final run-in to the finish and how things went. "There was a bend about eight or nine hundred meters before the line. It wasn’t really dangerous for the break but maybe in the bunch it might have been. Our speed is not so high, especially as everyone was looking at each other to see what they were planning to do.

"I saw that the rider from Recycling and the Scottish rider wanted to work together. He [Manning] started to lead it out two kilometres from the finish, working alone from then. I knew then I only had to look out for the other rider. He was behind me, so I was always turning my head to see where he was. Any time when he was standing out of his saddle, I was ready to jump onto his wheel. Then, 200 metres before the finish I started my sprint. It was fine from there."

Yellow jersey Nick Nuyens said that QuickStep had a tough day controlling things. "We were not really getting any help from the other teams. Our guys were pulling all the time," he said. "About 50 kilometres from the finish I went to Blaudzun and asked for him to put one of his guys up with our riders, just to maintain the tempo. The whole stage was quite fast. Then in the last 15 kilometres, a Spanish guy came to help us.

"It was quite hard to control the race. Michael [Rogers] was not pulling on the flat because yesterday he did all the mountains at the front. And Paolini was up front all day yesterday, so he was a bit tired.

Nuyens heads into tomorrow's race against the clock with a seven second buffer, but knows that a strong performance is crucial. "The time trial will be very important. We have to make some decisions before it. The circuit is very technical, so maybe it is better go with a normal bike. I don't know. We will see tomorrow. I will try my best but if Michael [Rogers] wins, that is okay too. And if I keep the jersey it is even better! The main goal is to win the jersey. If we can win the stage, it is even better for the team.

"My main goal coming here was to take a stage. I wanted to win again. After I took the first stage I thought that there was a good chance to keep the jersey for a while. Now I want to win the general classification and also the time trial, if it is possible. But it is not that easy, we will see."

How it unfolded

Today’s stage was run off in fine weather and in front of massive crowds, enhancing the motivation of the riders. Shortly after the drop of the flag, Serguei Ivanov (T-Mobile), Paul Manning (Recycling.co.uk), Evan Oliphant (Scotland) and Kazuo Inoue (Bridgestone Anchor) attacked and were 30 seconds clear after 6 kilometres. The bunch didn't respond to the move and their advantage jumped up to 1 minute and 12 seconds by kilometre ten, and then to two and a half minutes 5 kilometres later.

Manning was the best placed overall in 50th, 24'17 behind Nuyens, and this made it likely that the bunch would give them some slack.

Behind, both the Downing brothers experienced troubles inside the first 25 kilometres. National road race champion Russell crashed and suffered abrasions to his left arm and leg, taking 12 kilometres to get back to the bunch, while Dean experienced handlebar problems and needed mechanical assistance. Meanwhile the break kept plugging ahead and had a lead of 4'22 by the top of the category 3 Cromford climb (30.6 km), where Manning led Inoue, Ivanov and Oliphant over the summit. In doing so, the four mopped up some of the points that Ryan Cox (Barloworld Valsir) needed to take back from mountains leader Julian Winn.

Manning was also first over the line at the special prime in Duffield (50.9 km). At this point the quartet had 5'43 and the daylight between bunch and break continued to grow, jumping to 8'37 some 20 kilometres later. Back in the bunch, MrBookmaker.com rider Jeremy Hunt had a fall and was taken to hospital with facial injuries. The Englishman had started the stage second to Paolini in the points classification and 14th overall.

Oliphant won the sprint at Loughborough (114.8 km) ahead of Inoue, Manning and Ivanov. He was also first at the sprint at Leicester (133.2 km), beating Ivanov, Inoue and Manning to the line. Shortly afterwards, the gap was clocked at 13'49 and, with less than 70 kilometres remaining at that point, it became certain that the winner would come from this group. This gap then went out even further, going up to its maximum of 14'19 with 36 kilometres to go.

Oliphant beat Inoue, Ivanov and Manning to take the category 3 climb prime at Ab Kettleby (160.8 km). Manning was then first to the top of the category 3 climb of Upper Broughton (166.9 km), ahead of Ivanov, Oliphant and Inoue.

The fun and games started after that final KOM, with Oliphant attacking and gapping the other three riders. He was brought back shortly afterward. A kilometre later, Manning jumped but was closed down by Ivanov. The four resumed what was now an uneasy truce, but both tried again before the finish, to no avail.

Manning led things out inside the final kilometre but while Oliphant did what he could to take the victory, Ivanov was too quick. He blasted home to take his second victory of 2005, with Oliphant, Inoue and Manning finishing in that order. Paolini brought the bunch home just over 10 minutes later, cementing his grip on the points jersey, while Nuyens rolled over the line in eighth. He will start tomorrow's four kilometre time trial with a seven second advantage over Blaudzun, moving a step closer towards winning this year's Tour of Britain.
