Flecha surprises
Bettini closer to World Cup lead

In a surprising finish to the 91st Züri-Metzgete/Championship of Zurich, Argentinean born Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha won a 30 rider bunch sprint ahead of favourite Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step-Davitamon) and Jerome Pineau (Brioches la Boulangère). It was Flecha's ninth career victory and his biggest one to date, having also won the 11th stage of the Tour de France in Toulouse in 2003. Flecha benefited from the confusion in the sprint, as Bettini found himself on the wrong side of the road when the sprint started and by the time he had found Michael Barry's wheel on the right side of the road, Flecha already had enough of a jump to win.
"I found the right wheel at the right time," said Flecha of his positioning in the finale. "And I pulled off the best sprint I've ever done. I've been pursuing a victory for several months and I'll say that it was worth the wait.

"I felt really determined in the last week because I felt well recovered from the fatigue of the Tour and the Spanish test in San Sebastian. This is a team victory because Frigo and Gustov, without forgetting the work of the other Fassa riders, made it possible to achieve this prestigious success."
Paolo Bettini's second place - his third in a World Cup this year - saw him edge very close to Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) in the overall standings. Bettini now has 308 points while Rebellin, who finished sixth, has 314 points. The Olympic Champion, who was wearing a special gold trimmed jersey today, will now look forward to October's Paris-Tours and the Tour of Lombardy to try and overhaul Rebellin.
How it unfolded

172 riders rolled out of Zurich in cool, slightly overcast conditions. It didn't take too long for the break of the day to establish itself, as American David Zabriskie (USPS-Berry Floor) and Spaniard Carlos Barredo (Liberty Seguros) attacked after 10 km and were able to get clear of the disinterested peloton, riding out to a 21 minute lead at one stage. They were pursued by Frank Schleck (CSC) and then Christophe Mengin (FDJeux.com), but while the Frenchman was persistent with his efforts, he was 6'30 behind them after 72 km (with the bunch at 17 minutes) and eventually came back to the peloton with around 80 km to go.
The chase was organised by several teams, with T-Mobile particularly interested in Alexandre Vinokourov's chances. Also Quick.Step (for Bettini) and Gerolsteiner (for Rebellin) contributed to the workload, bringing the gap back from 19'12 with 109 km to go to 10'58 at the start/finish line with 82 km (two laps) to go. Guerini, Konecny (T-Mobile) and Rogers (Quick.Step) were the main riders doing the damage, and it was clear that the break would run out of time before the finish.

On the second last time up the Pfannenstiel climb with 64 km to go, Zabriskie accelerated away from Barredo in a bid for some solo glory. But although the American managed to get a 15 second gap, Barredo did not give up and caught him over the top of the climb. The pair's cooperation wasn't too good after that, and on the final climb of Forch with 40 km to go, Barredo returned the favour to Zabriskie and attacked, leaving him for dead. It was academic at that point anyway, as the peloton was less than a minute behind with an interesting counter attack going on the climb with Francesco Casagrande (Lampre), Alexandre Vinokourov (T-Mobile), Markus Zberg (Gerolsteiner) and Michael Rogers (Quick.Step).
The four quickly caught and passed Barredo, who had been in front for 195 km, and managed to get a 30 second gap over the peloton, where the chase was taken up by Rabobank. The break might have been more successful but for the tactics of Michael Rogers, who was working for his teammate Bettini in the bunch and refused to do a turn. The cooperation stalled, and the peloton recaptured the break right at the foot of the final climb of the Pfannenstiel with 22 km to go.

Immediately, Bettini went to the front and opened up a small gap with Rebellin and Michael Albasini (Phonak) on his wheel. This reduced the bunch to 30 riders, and the attacks continued all the way up the climb. Patxi Vila (Lampre) made several moves off the front, and was joined by Verbrugghe (Lotto-Domo), Moncoutié (Cofidis) and Vinokourov (T-Mobile) as the climb steepened towards the summit. At the top with 18 km to go, Verbrugghe and Moncoutié had surged ahead of Vinokourov, with the rest of the front group coming over in twos and threes, eventually regrouping on the descent.
On the last little climb of Wetzwil with 14 km to go, Rebellin put in a strong move that shook the rest of the bunch off his wheel. The World Cup leader was pursued by Olympic champion Bettini, as well as former Zurich winner Dario Frigo (Fassa Bortolo) and a resurgent Paolo Savoldelli (T-Mobile). Bettini bridged the gap on the descent with 9 km to go, then Frigo and Savoldelli caught up to form a nice quartet with 8 km to go. It seemed like this would be the winning move, but the rest of the front group had rallied and pulled the leaders in with 6 km to go.

Erik Dekker, Rik Verbrugghe and Michael Barry all tried late attacks, but Bettini's teammate Patrik Sinkewitz did a superb job in towing the group at high speed to the 1 km to go banner, where Dekker tried again with an identical result. Bettini started his sprint on the left hand side of the road but switched to the right when he saw Barry and Flecha jump hard. He took Barry's wheel and came around the Canadian, but Flecha on his right was too strong and won the sprint ahead of Bettini and Jerome Pineau (Brioches la Boulangère), gaining a shoulder clap from Bettini who recorded his third second place in a World Cup in August.
Davide Rebellin finished sixth in the sprint and hung onto his jersey by 6 points, which means the last two rounds (Paris-Tours and the Tour of Lombardy) in October should be an interesting battle.
