Davis takes biggest career win

Allan Davis (Liberty Seguros) has capitalised on his good late season form by winning the 91st Giro del Piemonte in a bunch sprint. Davis crossed the line ahead of Fassa Bortolo's Alberto Ongarato and Francesco Chicchi. It was Davis's fifth win of the season and certainly the biggest win of his career so far and the second in a row for Liberty after Marcos Serrano's success in Milano-Torino yesterday.
How it unfolded
152 riders left the start in Alba at 11:10am, with Gerolsteiner's Danilo Hondo the only non-starter. After four kilometres, Lotto-Domo's Thierry Marichal attacked, and was joined by his teammate Gorik Gardeyn a couple of kilometres later. By kilometre 38, the pair had a 3'10 lead over the peloton, even though the first hour was relatively slow at 34.2 km/h.
The gap grew quickly and by Salere (km 61) it was up to 9'15, with the average speed lifting to 36.1 km/h after two hours of racing. The peloton had already begun to chase and at km 88, Marichal was dropped by Gardeyn and went back to the bunch. Gardeyn only had 3'15 lead by that stage and his break concluded at km 102 when he was caught.

A series of tentative attacks and counter-attacks followed, but the Liberty Seguros led peloton did not let anything get away. The average had lifted to 37.3 km/h after three hours and got faster as the race neared its finish, as Fassa Bortolo also moved to the front to help Liberty Seguros set the pace. Fabian Jeker (Saunier Duval) and Steve Zampieri (Vini Caldirola) attacked with 16 km to go, but the pair could only stay away for 7 km until they were caught. Roberto Petito (Fassa Bortolo) also had a try with 2 km left, but he was swept up. The sprint saw Allan Davis repay the work of Liberty Seguros by taking a big win, several bike lengths ahead of Ongarato and Chicchi.
