Two contrasting generations of bike riders fought out a thrilling finish to the second stage of the Jayco Tour of Queensland in Hervey Bay today. 20 year old German rider Felix Odebrecht was pitted against 37 year old Belgian veteran Bart Heirewegh in a tough sprint to the line, with the German getting the judge's nod.

Odebrecht is still relatively raw at international level, whilst Heirewegh is closing the curtain on his lengthy career at the end of this tour, calling it quits after 200 victories across the world. But Heirewegh missed out, lowering his colours to the colourful young German who is making his first trip to Australia.

The pair were part of a strong 10 man group which hit out with three laps of the 2.4 km circuit remaining and although the peloton did peg them back over the last 1 km, Odebrecht and Heirewegh were able to find something extra when it counted. New South Wales rider David Harrigan claimed third spot in the stage, whilst most of the leading riders in General Classification standings were in the leading pack, meaning there was very little change in positions.

Brisbane-based New Zealander Jaaron Poad held onto the prized orange jersey, signaling he is the tour leader. However Poad - riding for Argon 18 Bikes-Caravello - is a marked man, watched closely by pre-race favourite David McKenzie (Jayco) and Ashley Hutchinson (Mirvac) among many other riders who believe they are a chance for overall tour honours.

Even today's stage winner, Odebrecht has thrown his hat into the ring with his second successive top 10 placing. "It was a hard race out there, it was very hot and there were a lot of attempted breaks," Odebrecht said. "About 15 laps before the finish I was caught in the second gap and had to work that little bit harder to get across, otherwise I wouldn't have figured in the sprint."

Odebrecht (20) hails from Berlin and has been racing for nine years, progressing through the junior ranks to representing his country, where he won a stage of the Under 23 World Cup. The Hervey Bay Kermesse is only his second international class win. Odebrecht jumped from seventh to seconds in GC honours after his win and is now just 1 second behind Poad, while English track endurance rider Dean Downing (Radio 4BU - KIX FM), improved his rating to third at 2 seconds behind the leader. McKenzie and Hutchinson fell from second and third to eighth and ninth respectively after failing to make an impact on the Hervey Bay stage.

The tour also claimed its first three casualties today with UNO Clothing duo Craig McCartney and George Vallins failing to finish and Germany's Timo Scholz (Malaysia Airlines) also a withdrawal, reducing the total number in the field to 57. Scholz, who also fell ill in the recent Herald Sun Tour, reduces the Malaysia Airlines team to four riders, making it slightly more difficult for Odebrecht to snatch the leader's jersey away from Poad.

Poad himself had a good race, picking up 5-seconds bonus in intermediate sprints, but just missed out on a further bonus when he finished 11th - one spot shy of a further bonus. Englishman Keiran Page (Radio 4BU - KIX FM) strengthened his lead in the Malaysia Airlines Sprint Championship, moving 8 points clear of Poad.

The Tour of Queensland is shaping as a sprinter's race, although there are still some mountains to get over before the finish in Bundaberg on Saturday. Odebrecht admits he is no climber, preferring sprints on the flatter roads. "I have learnt a lot from Marcel Wüst, he is a great tactician and being able to train with him has helped me a lot," Odebrecht said. "He has been a very big influence on my career so far."

Wüst, a former champion of the sport, is managing the Malaysia Airlines team this week and was a proud man when young Odebrecht stood tall on the podium.

South Australian Russell Van Hout (Subaru) moved high into calculations with a solid seventh at Hervey Bay. Van Hout is now fourth overall and only 3 seconds behind Poad, who is under increasing pressure to maintain the lead. Even Heirewegh - in his final tour - could be a dark horse. The popular Belgian is 8 seconds adrift of Poad and keen to finish his career with another victory. "My legs are not as young as some of these good riders around, but I would like to think I can stay with them," he said. "I enjoy it in Australia and I race well in Queensland, I have good memories here."

The Hervey Bay Kermesse stage had a little bit of everything for the cycling purist, plenty of breakaways, attacks, counter-attacks and cat-and-mouse tactics with all of the big guns watching each other with precision-like tactics.

The tour will continue on Wednesday with the first of the dual stages, starting with the Canefields Road Race at Oakhurst near Maryborough and then a twilight criterium in Bundaberg starting at 5 p.m.
