Bettini wraps up Tirreno-Adriatico
Petacchi claims his third

Italy's Paolo Bettini has emerged as the final victor in Tirreno-Adriatico, claiming two stage wins along the way. Bettini won by a mere five seconds over Oscar Freire and 11 seconds ahead of Erik Zabel in a race highlighted by mad bunch finishes by the best sprinters in cycling. Alessandro Petacchi won the final stage Tuesday, taking his third in the race and the fourth for his team alongside Roberto Petito who won stage 5 in a solo break. Bettini now heads into this weekend's World Cup opener Milan-San Remo as defending champion, heavy favourite, and a man brimming with confidence.
"Mentally it was a stressful day," Bettini said after the race was over. "To be honest, the whole Tirreno-Adriatico has been stressful. I had to sprint right to the very end with Freire in the bonus sprints and wait for the outcome of the final sprint. When I saw that Freire was boxed in with 300 metres to go, I realised I had won."
Although not a race loaded with major climbs, the varied parcours of Tirreno-Adriatico was well suited to riders like Bettini and Freire- and based on his third place overall, Erik Zabel- who can not only sprint with the best, but can climb a hill and make the selection on a difficult course. Despite his three stage wins, sprint king Petacchi could muster only 75th place in the final general classification.

The 132 riders remaining in the race set off for a 162km circuit from San Benedetto del Tronto, and the mood was relaxed as the peloton covered just 24 kilometres in the first hour. With Bettini's top rivals within seconds on overall time, the racing was no doubt about to pick up as the final jersey was certainly up for grabs. Few fireworks went off in the first half of the stage, and ultimately it was Brioche La Boulangère's young Rony Martias who decided to set off on a solo venture. Martias went clear at kilometre 80 and quickly built a lead of three minutes as the peloton let him go.
The flat second half of the parcours, which finished with six laps of a 9km circuit, allowed Martias to build his lead to a maximum of almost five minutes. The peloton, under the watchful eye of Petacchi's Fassa Bortolo team, also knew that Martias was no match for the sprinters' trains in the wind up to the finish.
The bunch completed the first lap of the finishing circuit 2'26 behind Martias, ramping the speed up to an average of 40 km/h. It would only get faster as Bettini and Freire set up for the first bonus sprint on the third lap of the circuit. Martias ate up the biggest time bonus, while Freire edged out Stuart O'Grady (Cofidis) and Bettini behind. The mass acceleration in the field virtually wiped away Martias' lead, which fell to under a minute.
Lap five of the circuit offered another bonus sprint as Martias hung tough out front. This time it was Zabel who took second, followed by O'Grady and Rabobank's Steven De Jongh. By this point the peloton was steaming toward the finish at 47 km/h and by the start of the sixth and final tour Martias was swept up and spit out the back of the hungry pack.

A slight easing of the pace ensued as the sprinters positioned themselves for the final showdown. Alessandro Petacchi surged ahead and finished the tour as he started, with his arms in the air as he outmuscled the rest of the field. Zabel took second, followed by Saeco's Gabriele Balducci, but it was Bettini who took the final prize of race winner.
"This year I'm in better condition than I was last year," Bettini admitted. "Last season I wasn't well but in the end things didn't go too badly. I know that everyone is waiting for me to attack [at Milan-San Remo]... My favourites are Petacchi, Freire and Cipollini, but I'll certainly not be sitting back. I'll be giving my all."
