Rain, rain, go away -- Holden goes it alone

Stormy weather can't cloud win for Holden in New York

Buckets of rain poured on the streets of downtown New York this morning, but that did not deter Mari Holden (T-Mobile) from soloing to victory at the second women's professional race of the BMC Software New York City Championships.

The 2000 World Time Trial Champion took the risk of riding in a pack around the wet technical course out of play by attacking with fifteen minutes left in the hour-long race. "There were times when you could barely see the road in front of you, it was raining so much!" second place Gina Grain (Victory Brewing) explained. "Each corner was slick -- there was somebody always going down. It was a tactical race for sure."

Shannon Hutchison (Colavita/Bolla) took third in the field sprint, but not after having a rough race. "I did try to stay near the front, but you never know what is going to happen. One time, a girl right next to me slid out and into me -- took me out. Another time a girl on the cobbles slid out and I tried to avoid her -- but of course it's on the cobbles, and I didn't move that much, and I slid out. Then after I got pushed back, I had a front flat and I had to go to the [Mavic] pit for a third time. So, thank you guys!"

Mari Holden was able to build enough of a gap to insure a proper salute to the crowd, something she never does for fear of doing something embarrassing. "It's so funny because my whole career, whenever I win, I'm so nervous that the field is going to catch me that I NEVER put my arms up or anything. And when I knew I was going to win, I was so excited that I couldn't believe it, so I was like, "I'm going to put my arms in the air for the last 100 meters to make sure I get the picture! I told my husband that if I win you better get the picture! Then I came through the finish and they told me that they didn't get the picture, and I'm like, 'You're kidding!' But they wanted to redo it so I came back through again with my arms up. So at least I'll get the picture -- it's not the original, but I can pretend."

But she won't have to pretend that she won.
