McCartney Cashes Two Payback Checks in Georgia

Jason McCartney has sacrificed both mind and body for his teammates in this year's Dodge Tour de Georgia. Today the cycling gods rewarded him on the first true climbing stage. McCartney placed himself in a solid breakaway just a little more than twelve kilometers into the race. The break dwindled until only McCartney remained with only one more ascent up Woody's gap between him and the victory. With Armstrong and the other G.C. contenders of the race marking each other back down the road, McCartney lowered his head and held his lead long enough to claim stage 6 and the King of the Mountains jersey.

Though McCartney had a teammate in Chris Wherry to help drive the break, all of his companions contributed. "I owe thanks to all those guys [in the break] because they drove hard all day, and they knew that they were probably not going to make it, but they kept driving for me," McCartney remarked. "I felt like they were my team working for me!" But when it was go time, the veteran racer knew what to do. "They were kind of hesitating on the climb, and I knew it was now or never -- and [Adamsson] wasn't really working with me and I was like 'I can't have this,' so I had to leave him too."

McCartney is no stranger to racing at this level. Going on thirty years-old, he has raced in the U.S. and Europe, but was plagued by injury. He hung up the bike for a few years, but couldn't stay away for good. After his teammates finished with their hugs, McCartney's former 7up/Maxxis teammate and former USPRO Criterium champion Kevin Monahan phoned to give his congratulations.

Today's stage was the first serious climbing stage, and though the strong European professionals such as Armstrong are used to climbing huge mountain passes, they had never raced a course quite like this -- dealing with the relentless undulations made life difficult for everyone. "I have never seen a stage like that today," remarked Armstrong. "The climbs weren't hard but the undulations were. Every time you turned corner there was another hill -- they came early and never stopped." Mario Cipollini even exclaimed his surprise about the course to Armstrong. "At one point, Cipo came up to me and said, 'I've never seen a course like this!' (in his best Texan-Italian accent), and I said, 'I know, I haven't either!' It was very tough."

Even though the main break went away early, that didn't mean it was smooth sailing for the race leader. "Chris [Horner] attacked on the most difficult climb we did today," said Armstrong. "[It was] a good attack, but we thought it was too early and it was better for us to stay together and ride tempo -- there was still a lot of racing to go to the finish." Armstrong also had to reel in strong attacks from CSC near the top of final climb, including Jens Voigt and Bobby Julich.

But it was McCartney's day, and he was nothing but thankful. "This is a little bit of payback -- but it's been awesome working for Gord and the guys," said McCartney. "That's what I do and that's what I do best."

The 2004 Dodge Tour de Georgia's Stage Five started in the quaint northern Georgia town of Dalton, hometown of Credit Agricole Espoirs rider Saul Raisin. It was a beautiful Friday morning on an Appalachian spring day when the peloton headed east across the rolling mountains of the northern Georgia. Reminiscent of the Ardennes climbs, Stage 5 would be the queen stage of the Georgia tour.

After a constant series of attacks outside of Dalton, six riders finally achieved separation from the rest of the peloton on the way to the first sprint in Chatsworth after 25km. Jacky Durand (Colnago-Landbouwkredeit), Stefan Adamsson (Barloworld), Henk Vogels (Navigators), Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly) and two Healthnet riders, Jason McCartney and Chris Wherry were away. Adamsson took the sprint with the first climb of Fort Mountain looming ahead and as the sextet crested the summit after 41km, they had a 2' advantage over the USPS-Berry Floor led peloton with McCartney taking the KOM points. Although the news was made official on Friday that the United States Postal Service would not renew their title sponsorship of the cycling squad, the bad news didn't slow down Yellow Jersey Lance Armstrong's Blue Train.

Through the Chatahoochee National Forest on Georgia State Route 5, the break and peloton rolled along and the other side of Fort Mountain in Ellijay, the break had gained five minutes on the group. Durand took the sprint points as Wherry was virtual Yellow Jersey as he was in 23rd at 3'47". While Postal rolled along the purple blooming wisteria, McCartney, Wherry and Adamsson pounded away up front. After 100km of racing, as the Georgia tour entered Fannin County, the gap remained at five minutes. The race pace was steady at 37km/hr and the second climb of the day was coming up fast for the break.

At 975m., Woody Gap is the first of the three climbs on the famed Three Gaps route so popular among Georgia cyclists. Status quo remained as the tempo stayed steady past the Deep Hole recreation area and through the large crowds arrayed along the route. McCartney was raging as he took the KOM atop Woody Gap and the raced dove down the back side into Lumpkin County.

At the base of Woody Gap, the parcours turned left on Route 19 towards Blairsville into Angus beef county. The peloton was 4km behind the break as Healthnet's John Lieswyn had a rear wheel change on the climb. Up Neel's Gap to the 957m. summit past De Soto Falls, USPS-Berry Floor's Tony Cruz did yeomans work pulling the blue train with the Yellow clad Armstrong in tow. On the wide, three lane climb, Stage Two winner Mario Cipollini dropped off the fast climbing pace and most of his Domina Vacanze teammates stayed with him. McCartney took the KOM again atop Neel's Gap, while the race pace was 10 minutes behind the slowest schedule.

The winning move

Down the short descent of Neel's Gap and back up the steep, short climb of Wolfpen Gap, McCartney made his move and attacked the break, blowning the move apart. His move was the right one, with only Adamsson able to keep McCartney in sight. The Healthnet rider took his 4th consecutive KOM with just 35km to go and made his bid for glory. 4' behind, as the peloton hit Wolfpen, Chris Horner also made his bid for freedom on the steepest part of the ascent. Horner was hoping CSC would join him in attacking Yellow Jersey Armstrong, but it was nothing doing for the red & black boys. Horner managed to pick most of the shattererd break off by the summit, but Armstrong's team picked up the pace and managed to bring back Horner on the descent of Wolfpen. McCartney had flown the coop and had 1'45" 2'45" on the 50 strong chase group, with another 50 riders chasing at six minutes'.

Approaching the second, short ascent of Woody Gap with Bobby Julich (CSC) attacked but Lance Armstrong himself covered the move, as he did when Voigt went on the run-in with 15 km to go. Up front, McCartney was feeling the pain of the hammer man, as the constant up and down climbs, the side wind and lack of water in the last 30km almost cooked the Healthnet rider, but the valliant Iowan hung on for the solo win in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd in Dahlonega. Former Italian champ Salvatore Commesso (Saeco) was 2nd at 53", but the Italian was peeved post-stage as he thought he could have won the stage if the chase into Dahlonega would have been more sustained. U23 World Champ Sergy Lagutin (Colnago-Landbouwkrediet) was 8th for his first pro top ten finish, just ahead of Armstrong.

Tomorrow: Stage 6 - Athens-Brassstown Bald - 206km

Starting in lovely Athens, the Classic City, the penultimate stage of the '04 Dodge Tour de Georgia travels due north 110km to the Appalachian Mountains of North Georgia before hitting the 15km ascent to Hogpen Gap (1061m). More rollers across the beautiful Georgia countryside lead up to the dramatic finale of the ascent of Brassstown Bald Mtn., at 1426m., the highest point in Georgia. This is a very steep, 10km climb to a mountaintop finish that could feature a head to head battle between Armstrong and Horner for race supremacy.
