Bettini, back to Basque!

Italian champion takes second win in one week, assumes World Cup lead

What to say about Quick.Step-Davitamon's Paolo Bettini? One week after an aggressive race in Hamburg, where after several attacks he still had the force to outsprint four dangerous breakaway companions, the Italian national champion did it again Sunday, making all the right moves and finishing off with a powerful sprint to take the win in San Sebastian ahead of Ivan Basso (Fassa Bortolo). In claiming the Clasica San Sebastian, Bettini also assumed the overall lead in the World Cup. Previous leader Peter Van Petegem failed to gain any points on a parcours that did not suit his talents, but dropped only to second in the series standings ahead of Michael Boogerd.

"I'm quite satisfied with my race, and the work done by the team," Bettini commented after his win. "I think I've done a lot to deserve this victory, and I can look ahead to the next races with a certain amount of serenity. Next Sunday at Zurich I would like to finish this amazing month of August with another great performance to take advantage of my good form."

Bettini once again used brains and brawn to take his third World Cup win of the season. He helped create the final selection and weed out the pretenders on the Cat. 1 climb of the Jaizkibel, kept the pace high in the ten man break that moved clear after the summit, and when the break's cohesiveness began to disappear on the outskirts of San Sebastian, Bettini was not afraid to attack with 15km left to race, sensing a 'now or never' moment.

Only Basso was able to mark the decisive attack at the right moment, although he clearly lacked the power of Bettini, content to sit on Bettini's wheel, seldom having the strength to pull through for more than a few seconds. Bettini wasn't phased, however, and clearly trusted his own abilities to both lead the attack and still put in a fast finish.

The Clasica San Sebastian was this year an Italian affair, with Danilo Di Luca (Saeco), Francesco Casagrande (Lampre), and Andrea Noe (Alessio) rounding out the top five. Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner), second last week in Hamburg, finished seventh behind the best Basque of the day, Gorka Gerrikagoitia (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

Casagrande also raced aggressively and was clearly in form, and he too was quick to show his frustration when the wind began to go out of the break's sails with less than 20km to race. As riders fetched bottles from the team cars and began to watch each other, Casagrande motioned to the others to keep working, knowing the chase was on behind. A former winner of the race, Casagrande would no doubt be frustrated to see Bettini profit from the break's loss of organisation, and despite a strong chase with Di Luca and Noe, he could neither reel in Bettini, nor stand much of a chance to beat Di Luca in a sprint for the final step on the podium.

How it unfolded

Virtually from the start, the attacks began. A small group was able to move clear after 11km of racing, featuring Jose Vicente Garcia Acosta (iBanesto.com), Jorg Jaksche (ONCE-Eroski), Leif Hoste (Lotto-Domo), and Nicolas Portal (Ag2r). The quartet quickly gained a substantial advantage, which reached a maximum of 15'30 by the foot of the third climb of the day, the Alto De Azkarate. By the summit of the following Cat. 2 climb, the Alto De Udana, it was clear the quartet would have to work awfully hard to keep the peloton at bay.

After toiling in the heat all day along with his three breakaway companions, Garcia Acosta decided to take his chances on his own, and attacked the lead group with just under 60km to race on the small climb of the Alto De Gaintxurizketa. His move worked, at least as far as dropping the other three riders was concerned. The peloton by this point was within five minutes of the break, and as Garcia Acosta headed to the foot of the typically decisive Jaizkibel, the favourites were getting ready for the big battle to come.

The Saeco and Cofidis teams took the responsibility of chasing. Saeco in particular had several cards to play with Astarloa, Celestino, and Di Luca, while David Millar was Cofidis' leader for the race and riding strongly near the front to stay in position. Rabobank soon joined in the chase as well, thinking primarily of Michael Boogerd, who before the race began sat in striking distance of the World Cup lead.

Jaksche, Hoste, and Portal were absorbed by the fast-moving peloton just before the foot of the Jaizkibel, as Garcia Acosta tried to hold onto his dwindling advantage just two minutes ahead. As Quick.Step's Paolo Bettini and Richard Virenque forced the pace, Garcia Acosta was swept up by the shattering peloton, and the real race was set to begin.

Bettini, through a combination of attacks and steady pace-setting, managed to whittle the field down to the core favourites, and by the summit of the Jaizkibel just 10 riders were together, including Ivan Basso (Fassa Bortolo), Michael Rasmussen and Michael Boogerd (Rabobank), Danilo Di Luca (Saeco), Gorka Gerrikagoitia (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Luis Perez (Cofidis), Francesco Casagrande (Lampre), Andrea Noe (Alessio), and Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner). With one poorly negotiated turn, Boogerd lost contact with this group, leaving nine men to work out their chances before San Sebastian.

The elite group consolidated its position on the descent of the Jaizkibel, and Boogerd eventually rejoined the leaders, but a certain amount of diligence would be necessary to keep the peloton from rejoining in the last 30km to San Sebastian. As riders took a last opportunity to grab bottles from their team cars and talk strategy, Bettini knew the moment had come to take his chances, as the chase groups behind were too close to allow for any leeway up front. On the final climb, the Alto De Gurutze, Bettini surged ahead, and only Basso could reach his back wheel.

The move was perfect, and although Basso had nothing to offer Bettini over the last 10km, the two managed to hold off Casagrande's desperate chase, coming home 20" clear of the first chase group. Bettini pulled almost the whole distance, lead out the sprint, and Basso simply had no answer. With another 100 World Cup points in the bag, Bettini now leads Van Petegem by 97 points, and Boogerd by 136. Next week's race in Zurich, round eight of the ten race World Cup, could offer Bettini yet another chance to prove his dominance and extend his series lead. Fortunes change quickly in the World Cup, however, and the Italian's lead is anything but secure.

"The World Cup is not yet won, and before taking a break and preparing for the World Championships in Hamilton, I'd like to gain some more ground on my closest rivals," Bettini noted.
