Break out a tinny and throw another prawn on the barbie - Brad's still in Yellow and now Robbie's got the Green. But the Aussie barbecue had a dash of Italian spice, when Italian super-sprinter Alessandro Petacchi rode a powerful lead out sprint to conquer his first ever Tour de France stage win.
"I have to thank all my teammates for the work they did today," Petacchi told Cyclingnews after the stage today. "They pulled all day and I really don't know how to thank them. It was a really hard sprint since I led out early at 250 meters and really had to dig deep to win. I really don't how I did it. I was hurting a lot on all the hills today since I haven't been racing since the Giro d'Italia. But today I think I confirmed my performance in the Giro...ecco mi qua! (here I am)."
Petacchi's Fassa Bortolo direttore sportivo Alberto Volpi was delighted, too. "The tour has started pretty well for us...yesterday we had some bad luck but today it was great to win. Let's see what happens when the mountains come."
Runner-up Robbie McEwen, who was disappointed to lose to the Italian, amassed sufficient points to earn the Tour's first Maillot Vert, and told Cyclingnews that "Petacchi was just too strong for me at the end today."

Today's stage ended in disaster for American Tyler Hamilton and his CSC team, as the man from Marblehead crashed along with 30 other riders in the sprint with 500m to go, including Maillot Jaune Brad McGee, Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer. Although sometimes accused of being crash-prone, there was nothing that Hamilton could do to avoid it. The crash happened in the final kilometre as the peloton charged into a strangely placed left hand curve. Hamilton got up and finished the stage with his right arm hanging by his side, CSC team spokesperson Brian Nygaard explained that with Hamilton now out of the Tour, "this would be a catastrophe; he's our main guy for the Tour."
Two time USPRO champ Fred Rodriguez (Vini Caldirola-So.Di) had hard words for the sketchy sprint. "I'd like to give kudos to (TdF boss) Leblanc for putting such a bad finish on the first stage of the Tour," said Fast Freddy. "I'm pulling at 60km/h... you know that the last kilometre is at 70km/h and to put a corner like that in the sprint (with 500m to go) is completely idiotic."
Another victim of the mass pile-up was American Levi Leipheimer (Rabobank), who had a bad bruise on his left thigh and was taken to the Meaux hospital for X-rays. It was later confirmed that he had broken his hip bone in his left buttock. Cyclingnews reached Rabobank's team director Theo De Rooy via mobile phone. A terribly disappointed De Rooij explained "Levi's gone, so..." De Rooij continued by explaining "maybe we've lost two guys since Marc Lotz crashed hard too."
Lotz was also taken to hospital suffering from facial injuries. Doctors found that his eye is badly hurt and it is certain that he will have to withdraw from the Tour too.

Four time Tour winner Lance Armstrong (USPS-Berry Floor) also went down but despite a bruise on his left thigh and a blown rear tire, he appears to be OK. Armstrong changed bikes with teammate Chechu Rubiera and finished the stage. He told Cyclingnews afterwards that "Hey, it's never good to crash; but it was nothing serious. I just fell over and got piled on top of. Today was a nervous stage, people were excited because it was the first day...there were lots of spectators and traffic islands along the road. But it's always good to get the first one over."
USPS-Berry Floor director Johan Bruyneel downplayed the drama post-stage, saying that "It was a normal Tour de France stage - quite nervous with a crash at the end. So we'll go to the end to see what the consequences are for Lance and Eki's injuries." (Ekimov was also involved in the crash).
Armstrong's key rival Gilberto Simoni (Saeco) crashed as well but only had some bruising on his right side. "It was a really nervous, hard stage today...in the final it seemed like there would be a clean sprint, but with the speed there was a crash. I ended up on the barriers with 30 other guys...all the favourites were together behind the sprint and we all crashed together."

After a touristic toddle across Paris to Montgeron to Le Reveil Matin (Alarm Clock), where the first Tour de France started one century ago, the Centenary Tour Peloton stopped to commemorate the inauguration of Le Grande Boucle. Once a promotional stunt for the newspaper l'Auto, Tour de France has grown into one of the world's greatest sporting events.
It was a humid day with high overcast and with huge crowds lining the road, Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) grabbed the first sprint in Corbeil-Essones ahead of Maillot Jaune Brad McGee and Nazon (Jean Delatour). Fittingly, three French riders got away from the active peloton on an immediate counter after the sprint and established the first break of the Centenary Tour de France. Like last year's Tour, as the stage hit the first small climbs, Christophe Mengin (FDJ.com) went on the attack and was joined by two other riders, Walter Beneteau and long, lanky Andy Flickinger (Ag2r Prevoyance). The trio battled it out across Essone and into the verdant woods near Fontainebleau, while the peloton rolled along unconcerned.

As the trio passed the historic Chateau de Fontainebleau with 100km, their lead was almost 9'00, but as the feed zone approached, Lotto-Domo ds Marc Sargeant told his troops to ride for Robbie McEwen. That was the cue the other sprinters teams were waiting for, as Fassa Bortolo joined the chase.
The pace was fast all day, with the good break and hard chase keeping the average speed over 44 km/h average. By the time the break hit Coulommiers with 30km to go, The peloton was 1'30" behind and the gap was falling when Beneteau attacked his two break companions. Lotto-Domo, Fassa Bortolo and FDJ.com were chasing hard behind, and Beneteau's move provoked a counter by Flickinger who lasted alone out front until 11km to go, when he was caught and it was peloton groupeé.
Fassa Bortolo and Lotto-Domo duked it out up front with Vini Caldirola for the front. With 500m to go, a badly placed curve caused a crash of 30 riders. Petacchi led out the sprint and powered to his 13th win of the season in Meaux, while runner-up Robbie McEwen took the lead in the points competition and donned his favourite Maillot Vert.
Stage 2 - Monday July 7: La Ferté-sous-Jouarre-Sedan, 204.5km
Monday morning sees the Centenary Tour heading east across France from La Ferte-sous-Jouarre across the WW1 battle-scarred hills and plains of the Marne to Sedan, for what will likely be another sprinters battle. Look or another early break to be pulled back by the sprinters squads, and should Petacchi or McEwen grab some intermediate time sprints and win the final with it's 20" second bonus, Brad McGee could find his yellow tunic in peril.
