Bongiorno triumphs in KL; Danielson safely home

On the final stage in the Le Tour de Langkawi, Ruben Bongiorno (Ceramiche Panaria-Fiordo) shocked the crowd and his more fancied rivals with a surprise win in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
Until today, the Argentine has played second fiddle to their team's star sprinter, but this afternoon, Bongiorno was given free reign after the second immediate sprint solidified Graeme Brown's lead in the sprint classification over Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole).
"I was sprinting behind Brown as I was supposed to do and I managed to keep his speed and also to pass him," said Bongiorno. "There wasn't any designated leader today and as long as the team wins it's fine."
Brown wasn't so sure: "He's an idiot and he'll get a speaking to... I told him he nearly stuffed it up," said Brown about his teammates' violent swerve shortly after crossing the finish line.

In a race neutralised for all bar the sprinters, all other classifications remain unchanged: 24 year old Tom Danielson (Saturn) retained his leader's jersey and in doing so, has won the biggest race of his cycling career, Roland Green (Canada) very deservedly wins the mountains competition, Tomoya Kano (Japan) the best Asian rider, Iran the best Asian team, and Colombia-Selle Italia the best overall team.
"It was a total relief to come across the line, especially with my teammates around me; it was just an extremely emotional feeling," said a humble Danielson, who will most certainly go onto much bigger and better things.
"I’ve learned so much on this race," he added. "I now have a much better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses as a bike rider – I saw what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong. I understand what areas I need to work on improving."
All in all, another very successful Le Tour de Langkawi. And with the pressure now off the riders, many will be thinking about putting on their party duds and planning a very big night ahead.
How it unfolded

Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia and the traditional finishing town for the LTdL, played host once again for the final stage of the 8th edition of this race, a 75.6km circuit race comprising 12 laps of 6.5km circuit.
Being a Sunday, KL wasn't its usual big city self, normally filled with way too many cars, buses and taxis and millions of time-poor office workers rushing from one part of town to another. Instead, the city today was characterised by an assortment of people from all different nationalities, all with a common passion. Cycling.
Though these people hadn't come to witness any shake-up in the overall classification (or any other classification for that matter), but had come to pay their respect to the 122 cyclists who had so far ridden 1267.9 kilometres over the last nine days.

Even before the start outside the Dataran Merdeka at a quarter to four this afternoon, it was highly likely that all six classifications - GC, points, mountains, teams, Asian rider and Asian team - would remain unchanged.
By lap three, Chief Commissaire Michael Robb made sure of this with the threat of a downpour and in the interest of the riders' safety, the race was neutralised for all bar the sprinters.
"In consultation with the race organisation and in the interests of safety, I decided that it was best to neutralise the event, but sprints including the finishing sprint would count in the points competition," explained Robb after the race.

As a consequence, it wasn't unusual to see first and second placed riders Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) and Graeme Brown (Panaria-Fiordo) going hell for leather at the first of three intermediate sprints after 18.9 kilometres, with O'Grady comfortably beating Moreno Di Biase (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave') and Brown.
"I didn't want to do the sprints but Panaria wanted to sprint to the death so I thought if you want to do that I will too," said O'Grady afterwards, explaining that the rest of the bunch had agreed not to race hard until the final sprint because of the dangerous conditions. "I just did it to prove a point plus I was having a practice run at the sprint finish cause I wanted to have a go there."
The points situation was still 109-100 in Brown's favour, so when the clouds opened up almost immediately following the first sprint, luck appeared to be on O'Grady's side as the freckled one tends to be a little more crafty in tricky situations.

However, the Panaria lead-out men have been exceptional all week and at the second sprint after 37.8 kilometres, Brett Lancaster provided yet another perfect run-in to the line for his man Brown with O'Grady nowhere in sight. The score: Brown 114, O'Grady 100.
Meanwhile, back in the peloton, Saturn were more than happy to let the sprinter's teams fight it out or a breakaway go given the changed race circumstances.

Which is exactly what happened after 40 kilometres: Lars Ytting Bak (Team fakta), Michele Gobbi (De Nardi-Colpack) and Biagio Conte (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave') went clear, and for the next 25 kilometres, the peloton were unable to reel Bak and Conte back, although Gobbi was gobbled up soon after being dropped from his breakaway companions.
Just when the rain appeared to abate, a sun-shower greeted an already nervous bunch with two laps remaining. Bak and Conte had now being caught, and for the last ten kilometres, the seven-strong Panaria train came to the fore for the final time.
They didn't disappoint: in fact, they were so good that the battle for line honours was between two Panaria-Fiordo riders, and in the end, it was Ruben Bongiorno taking the stage from a surprised Graeme Brown with Stuart O'Grady a bike length behind.

Argentinian, Ruben Bongiorno, pipped his team mate Sydney's Graeme Brown, 23, (Ceramiche Panaria Fiordo) in the final sprint to claim his first professional victory in today's tenth and final stage of the Tour de Langkawi raced in wet conditions on a circuit in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. But the one - two by Panaria was not initially well received by BROWN who had not realised it was his team mate coming through the narrow gap between him and the barriers.
"I said 'good job'," said Brown wryly at the post race media conference before admitting that wasn't his first reaction. "He's an idiot and he'll get a speaking to .... I told him he nearly stuffed it up."
South Australian Stuart O'Grady, 29, (Credit Agricole) sprinted home third and was also not impressed by the Argentinian's tactics in the race for the line.
"The little Bongiorno guy was on a mission," said O'Grady. "He was either going to crash or stay on Brownie's wheel and I had no intention of spending the night in a Kuala Lumpur hospital so I didn't push it."
Bongiorno, a first year professional, also came under fire from the more experienced members of the peloton after Stage Two when two thirds of the field crashed in a mass pile up less than a kilometre from the line. O'Grady went up to the Argentinian after that stage and abused him for what he called 'the most ridiculous sprinting behaviour' he'd ever seen.
But Bongiorno seemed oblivious to the controversy and was ecstatic to have claimed his first victory.
"I was sprinting behind Brown as I was supposed to do and I managed to keep his speed and also to pass him," said Bongiorno. "There wasn't any designated leader today for the team and as long as the team wins it's fine."
"I don't like it when someone disturbs me in the bunch as I am a quiet person but only if they let me do my own thing in the last five kilometres," said Bongiorno in response to criticism of his erratic sprinting. " I think many riders are more dangerous than me."
The 75.6 kilometre final stage was neutralised on the second of twelve laps when officials became concerned about the wet conditions and chose to take the safe option. But curiously several kilometres later they announced the battle for the points on offer in the stage would continue. This meant the sprinters would still contest three intermediate sprints and the finish in a bid to improve their position in the green jersey competition which, going into the stage, was led by Brown.
"I thought if they neutralised GC (overall time) they'd neutralise the points too but I wasn't too concerned because I needed to only get one win in an intermediate to make sure I would not lose the jersey," said Brown who's only real rival was O'Grady who took out the first sprint at the end of three laps.
"I didn't want to do the sprints but Panaria wanted to sprint to the death so I thought if you want to do that I will too," said O'Grady explaining that the rest of the bunch had agreed not to race hard because of the wet, dangerous circuit. "I just did it to prove a point plus I was having a practice run at the sprint finish cause I wanted to have a go there."
Brown claimed the second sprint after six laps and was then assured of taking out the points competition.
"I would have liked to have turned my four second places into four firsts but I said to my team director today that I've contested 12 sprints in the last two weeks (including Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under) and crossed the line first four times (three wins credited), placed six times second, had third, a sixth and a seventh," said Brown. "My form's there in the sprints and I've learned a lot so hopefully by the time I get to the Giro d'Italia it will be look out Cipollini!"
O'Grady, who recently claimed the title of Australian road champion for the first time and placed third overall in Adelaide's Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under, is also pleased with his performance in his first Tour de Langkawi.
"The objective was a stage win and I got two and yesterday I climbed better than I ever have in Europe," said O'Grady who ended the tour second on the points competition and 14th overall. "You can't have good years every year but you also can't have bad years like I had last year (iliac artery surgery)."
"Things are snowballing now and I've had a good overall performance here and the year's just started so hopefully it's a sign of things to come for the rest of the season."
American Tom Danielson, 24, (Saturn) carried off the champion's yellow jersey at the end of the race after a consistent performance throughout and a tenacious defence of his lead on yesterday's decisive mountain stage into the Genting Highlands. Danielson claimed the lead from his team mate Queensland's Nathan O'Neill who won the opening time trial stage on the island of Langkawi. O'Neill wore yellow until stage seven when he crashed 1100 metres from the finish losing time and relinquishing his lead to the Saturn climber.
Today the Saturn team again rode as one unit to protect their number one placed rider.
"The goal early on was to have the team on the front and drill it the whole race, so it would be strung out to keep me at the front but as soon as they called the race off and it started pouring with rain the tactics changed," said an elated Danielson after being named 2003 champion. "Then we put the whole team at the back and asked the commissaire if all I had to do was finish 12 laps and he said 'yep' so that's what we did to make sure we got across the finish line safely. "
But Danielson did not celebrate until the final pedal stroke across the line at the end of 1343 kilometres and ten days of racing.
"Even though it was neutralised it was pretty dangerous out there and I didn't want to end up with concussion or a broken arm or broken leg," he said. "Munoz (Colombia Selle Italia rider ranked second overall behind Danielson) went down and it was almost more dangerous going slow around the corners because you weren't paying as much attention."
"It was a total relief to come across the line and especially with my team mates around me it was just an extremely emotional feeling," said Danielson adding that his immediate plan was to get in some shopping before the team's post race celebration.
The best placed Australian overall was Alan Iacuone, 29, (Flanders iteamNova) who finished 12th overall, 4min33sec behind Danielson.
Iacuone, who placed 3rd overall in the Tour de Langkawi in 1999, said he was in better form this year than last year when he returned to competition in Malaysia after a year off the bike.
"Last year I only had a few months training and lacked the racing strength but this year I felt a lot stronger," said Iacuone. "I thought up Genting I climbed better than in 1999 but it was a totally different than back then.
"The quality of the field was higher than '99 and I was just a bit disappointed that I didn't do a faster time trial prologue because then I would have been higher up overall," said Iacuone. "My time trialling let me down and if you look at the top 15 climbers overall I was probably the slowest on the Langkawi stage.:
"You try and work on your weaknesses but I really felt bad on the first day and that's just how it goes," said Iacuone who is looking forward to racing in more profile events this season after the merger between Flanders and iteamNova (a web membership based team) their listing as a Category Two professional team. "We've got some good races in Europe when we get back and having the Category Two is good motivation for the team and for our members."
In summary Australians claimed five stage wins - Brown stages five and seven, O'Grady stages six and eight and O'Neill stage one. Brown won the points competition with 128 points, 15 points clear of O'Grady and through O'Neill, held the race lead for seven days. The USA claimed overall honours and South Americans claimed the remaining stage victories. Europeans failed to win a stage or place in the top three overall. Reigning mountain bike world champion, Canadian Roland Green was consistent throughout to win the king of the mountains category.
