Chris Thater Memorial Amateur Racing

Binghamton, NY, August 27, 2006

More Amateur Action at Chris Thater: Day 2

By Matt Howey

After some fantastic amateur racing held on Saturday, additional categories enjoyed sharing the stage with the professional men and women on Sunday at the Chris Thater Memorial Criterium in Binghamton, NY.

Category 4/5

The first race on the challenging Thater Criterium Course, was the category 4/5 men's race. These amateurs showed that just because they are closer to the "beginner" level of the sport, they came out to race and the field was split in half almost immediately under the pressure of multiple money primes and anxious legs. With so many riders looking to move up to the next category, the pace was furious from the gun. In the end, it was Christopher Chaput (Champion System Racing) who snuck off the front after grabbing the final prime of the day to venture to the finish line solo over the last 4 laps. In close-pursuit was Brad Crosby (Colavita-SpokePost.com), who put in a valiant effort, but was unable to close the gap to the charging Chaput to ride in by himself for a solid second place finish. The field sprint was brought home by Gavin Robertson (Major Taylor Iron Riders) out-pacing Lee Palmateer (SAAB Halfmoon/CBRC) and rounding out the top-5 in the final dash to the line was young sensation Adam Farabaugh (Unattached).

Category 3

Some of the riders from yesterday's 2/3 race wanted to show their stuff without being hindered by a bunch of speedy category 2 riders in this category 3 contest, the final race of the Chris Thater Memorial Criterium weekend. The pace on the was very fast from the start with the field splitting into two large groups early in the race. With over 10 laps to go, two riders emerged from the field including eventual winner, Matthew Jamieson (Exodus) and another rider who was unable to keep pace with Jamieson and dropped back to the field a few laps later. Behind, the peloton was riding hard, but not hard enough to close down Jamieson's 30 second or so lead. Ryan Morris (Unattached) not only took a good portion of the field primes throughout the race, but he also lead them home with a convincing sprint over master national champion, Paul Curley (GearWorks) - Matt Spohn (White Rose Racing) and Cheyne Hoag (JW Dundee's Ales & Lagers) were also in the mix to round out the top-5.
