Team Florida Race Days
Gainesville, FL, February 12-13, 2005
The Florida Ranking System (FRS) and Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC) schedule opened this weekend, with the "Team Florida Race Days" events. Competitors participated in an individual Time Trial, Team Time Trial and Criterium for points toward Florida and collegiate rankings.
Gator Individual Time Trial (Saturday morning)
The Individual Time Trial opened the events with the coolest temperatures of the weekend. Under clear skies and with light winds, riders completed a flat fast 11.8 mile out and back course.
The Collegiate men and women set the stage as many were also in contention for the overall USCF placements. In the Collegiate A men, University of Florida rider Dan Larson set the time to beat for the day with a 26:07, while his up and coming teammate Philip Gaimon posted an impressive 26:47 for second. In the Collegiate Women, The UF women matched their male counterparts with Rebecca Larson and Elisabeth Schneider taking the top two spots there.
The Pro/1/2 men tried in vain to best Larson's(Cycle Science) time throughout the morning. The closest challenges coming from Kyle Wamsley(Snow Valley/Seal-on) posting a 26:15 and Grand Potter (Bike America) a 26:34 to finish second and third respectively. The Pro/1/2/3 women also aimed at a Larson, Rebecca this time. Riding For the Colavita/Cooking Light professional team, Larson's time of 28:51 held up as well with Kristin Sanders(JC Investors) finishing in 29:03 for second, and Sheila Orem (BBC) at 29:24 for third.
Gator Team Time Trial (Saturday afternoon)
Competing over an extended 18.9 mile course in the afternoon, teams of four attempted to display their cohesiveness and raw speed over the smooth course.
Again the University of Florida showed its dominance over conference rivals, as the UF men (Larson, Gaimon, David Guttenplan, Anton Tupa) bettered second place Lees McCrae and the 11 other challenger schools by well over two minutes. The UF women (Larson, Schneider, Teresa Garcia) were not denied their glory either, as they beat closest challenger Florida State University by over three minutes!
The Pro1/2 was hotly contested, as 12 teams battled for the team prizes. In the end, it was McAn Customs, led by top Florida racer Frank Travieso and Yosvany Falcon, claiming the top spot. JC investors slotted into second with the UF team claiming third ahead of the new US continental pro team, Aerospace Engineering-VMG in forth. The pro-am women were dominated by the Colavita/Cooking Light team who bested the ORC/Bobbies for the victory by over two minutes.
Gainesville Downtown Criterium
Sunday's criterium was met with beautiful weather and sunshine for the first time in several years. With a new shorter (1km) four corner course the race was set to be fast and furious.
Owing to the home field motivation and knowledge, UF again proved to be the best of the collegiate competition. In the Men's A event, it was Bradley Davis (UF) wrestling away from all others in the end for the win. After a race full of constant attacks, Davis eeked out a lead with teammate Peter Simms, Jason Stoner (FSU) and Joe Eldridge (Auburn) with three laps remaining. In the final straightaway the field charged to the line and passed most of the breakaway, but it was Davis, slightly ahead, that survived for the victory. He was followed directly by teammates David Guttenplan and Dan Larson for a UF podium sweep.
The Collegiate Women's finish didn't provide the down to the wire excitement, but handed UF an impressive win nonetheless. After about half of the race, Elisabeth Schneider escaped the field to be soon joined by teammate Rebecca Larson. The two rode clear and eventually lapped the main group. Alane Ballweg (FSU) proved to the best of the rest, sprinting in for third.
Larson continued her weekend of winning with the support of her Colavita Cooking Light teammates, and despite a bit of mechanical adversity. About halfway through the event, Larson's rear shifter cable snapped, leaving her with effectively a "two speed" machine. Despite this, Larson attacked and was soon joined by her teammate Kim Anderson. As in the college race, the pair lapped the group and rode in for the top spots. While Larson and Anderson claimed first and second, they also managed to lead a third teammate, Megan Esmonde, onto the podium.
The Pro/1/2 event was nowhere as clear a victory, as the finish was a mad gallop to the line decided by inches. With the fast course and vigilant work of several teams, all of the numerous breakaway attempts were quashed. No riders survived out front for more that a lap or two, and the stage was set for a final stretch showdown. At the line it was Yosvany Falcon (McAn Customs) inching ahead of reigning Florida State Road Champion John Durango (JC Investors). The top five were further rounded out by Chris Frederick(Aerospace Engineering-VMG), Frank Travieso(McAn Customs), and Kyle Wamsley(Snow Valley/Seal-on) respectively.
The next stop on the Florida Calendar will be the Brooker Road Race and Alachua Progress Park Criterium Feb19th,-20th. The collegiate competitors will next see action at Georgia Tech March 12th and 13th.
