Tour of Medford

August 9, 2003

By Kenneth Mills

Competitive cycling returned to Medford, New Jersey after a 9 year absence. Having last been run in the summer of 1994, riders from all over the tri-State area converged on this large but quaint town located outside the Philadelphia area.

The race was promoted by the Medford Recreation department and the Ready Pac-KMK Sports cycling team and Sponsored by Century 21 Alliance real estate.

The 44 man Pro 1-2-3 field was treated to a beautiful course that traveled 1 mile through downtown Medford and through a small residential community. The riders would contest 35 laps of the 1 mile 3 left turn course.

The riders were also treated to a surprise when it was announced the first 20 laps of the event would include a $10.00 per lap primes that were donated by the Medford Policemen association.

Throughout the day there were several individuals and small groups of riders that attacked the field in an attempt to get away and take their share of the $200 up for grabs in lap primes. Jon Erdelyi (Ofoto-Lombardi Sports) picked up the first lap prime and also ended with 4 other lap primes. Other riders attempting to breakaway included Thomas Mains (Ready Pac-KMK Sports) who took one lap prime and also spent the several laps late in the race away before being caught with 5 laps to go. No group was ever able to build more than a few second lead on the fast moving pack of riders.

In the end, Jonathan Jon Erdelyi (Ofoto-Lombardi Sports) took a flyer with 2.5 laps to go and held off a hard-charging field to take a much deserved win before he headed off to the US Professional Criterium Championships next weekend in Chicago.
