Agiskoviner cycling club

Eelmore, June 14, 2006

The rain did threaten, which kept people away I reckon, or maybe it was world cup fever? Who knows? Who cares? My Uni exams are a distant memory now, so it's back to some imaginative report writing! I have to thank Martin McCrossan of the Trackcycling.co.uk team for almost single handedly shaking up the 3/4 race tonight. We actually had a break that stayed away and that didn't contain a known "superstar" who everyone is normally happy to just let go and race for the next placing! He was constantly attacking and off the front alone until a few laps from the end saw him break with Mark Cracknell (awcycles.co.uk) and Andrew McKie (Swindon RC). These three held it to the line for a good sprint finish, which Andrew always looked like winning. Martin took a well deserved second place and the adulation of the crowd.

In the E/1/2's, Giant Asia pro rider Danny Lloyd had come along to get some racing under his belt before his next foray abroad to somewhere exotic. Richard Prebble was also "riding up", so there were two new names who were relative unknowns at Eelmore in this event. As usual the action started from the gun and the pace was kept high. There were several attempts to breakaway initially, but all got reeled in by the large VC Meudon and agiskoviner presence. Then Anders Christensen (www.agiskoviner.com/LiphookCycles), Dave Creegan (VC Meudon), Adam Thomson (BC PM) and Tom Smith (awcycles.co.uk) got away and built a good 100 metre lead. This is when the action really started, as the stronger riders left in the pack made their bids to get across. First over was Paul Pickup, Lee Day and Danny Lloyd, followed by Richard Prebble, Lee Smith and Simon Ernest (Felt Racing). This left 4 VC Meudon riders and Adrian Goatley from the field chasing, with Adrian quite content to let them do all the work of chasing. As they closed them down, Adrian jumped across with a very astute move, leaving the 4 Meudon riders to continue chasing, which ultimately they failed to achieve! From the large leading group, first Paul, then Anders attacked and taking Tom Smith with them they opened a reasonable gap. Now, everyone knows Tom Smith can sprint, so it was up to the agiskoviner pair, who know each other so well, to work him over, which they duly did. Tom was forced to lead out the sprint from the bottom corner and Anders came alongside and passed him in the last 50 metres, for a reasonably comfortable win. The E/1/2 bunched sprint was fast and furious, and it was Lee Day who took the best of the rest, followed by an improving Adrian Goatley after coming back from a dodgy illness!
