Day 1 - August 15: Newdigate circuit road race, 99.8 miles

Day one of Britain’s longest bicycle race saw the 66 riders complete the stage at an average speed of almost 26mph. This first stage of 99.8 miles, set in the country lanes around Newdigate near Crawley, was completed in record time this year.

The stage was won by Gareth Jones, of the North Wales-based Energy Cycles team. He made a daring attack 2 miles from the finish and managed to hold off the other 13 riders in the group which had been leading from the start. South East Region Champion, Gary Dodd of Kingston-based Sigma Sport RT took second ahead of Evans Cycles RT rider Justin Hoy in a tightly contested sprint for the line.

A chase group containing a number of the favourites chased hard and came within 19 seconds of catching the leaders.

Justin Hoy leads the Sprints competition, determined by bonus sprints along the course, from Gareth Jones, while Nick Kenwright of Energy Cycles leads the King of the Mountain contest from Matt Melville of Portsmouth-based VC St Raphael.

Tomorrow, the race moves on to Staplefield, east of Crawley, where a more severe test faces the riders who will tackle a series of climbs during the 97.6mile race.
