Stage 1 - June 5: Road Race, 64 miles

O'Brien wins Stage 1

By Shane Stokes

Kanturk Credit Union rider Maurice O'Brien won today's opening stage of the Thornton's Waste Dunboyne Three Day, outsprinting Donal Byrne (Orwell - Dundrum Shopping Centre) in their two-up gallop for the line. O'Brien and Byrne had gone clear approximately 25 miles into the race with six others, the group building up a maximum lead of about a minute and a half. The first two forged ahead in the closing stages while the remainder of the break were mopped up by the fast-closing main field.

O'Brien and Byrne held on to finish 29 seconds clear of the peloton, which was led home by Neil Jenkins (Bray Wheelers), Willy Byrne (Hillcrest Hire CC), Noel McGlynn (Ravens CRT) and Shane O'Halloran (Duhallow Wheelers). Barry Meehan (Worldwide Cycles) and Barry Woods (Killorglin Credit Union) were seventh and eighth.

The race continues tomorrow morning with a short time trial, followed by a road race in the afternoon. It concludes on Monday.

Stage 2 - June 6: Time Trial, 3 miles; Stage 3 - June 6: Road Race, 64 miles

Woods on top

By Shane Stokes

Sixth overall after the stage two time trial, Killorglin Credit Union rider Barry Woods won yesterday afternoon's stage three road race at the Thornton's Waste Dunboyne Three Day, seizing the race lead from Orwell - Dundrum SC's Donal Byrne. At the end of the 64 mile stage Woods raced to the line five seconds clear of first year junior Martin Munroe (Western Lakes CC), with Len Carrigan (Dublin Wheelers) 43 seconds down. Maurice O'Brien (Kanturk Credit Union), who was second on GC after the time trial, finished one further second back in winning the bunch sprint for fourth.

A disappointed Donal Byrne finished in the main field, slipping to second overall. He will start today's final stage needing to make up eleven seconds on Woods, with O'Brien 21 seconds down in third place.

Victory in the morning time trial went to Cycleways Lee Strand rider John Mason, who covered the 3 miles in 6 minutes 35.81 seconds. John Lynch of Bray Wheelers was just two seconds back, with Byrne third, at eleven seconds. Byrne was best second category rider in the FBD Milk Rás and while still tired from his exertions there, his second place on stage one and third in the TT put him firmly into yellow. Starting the third stage, O'Brien was ten seconds down with Mason a further nine in arrears.

As expected, yesterday afternoon's 64 mile stage was an aggressive affair. After a number of early attacks Byrne, Mason, Seamus Kelly (Newbridge CC) and Keith Daly (Leinster) went clear. They were joined by Woods, Lynch, Barry Meehan (World Wide Cycles), David Lane (Orwell - Dundrum SC), Paddy Kelly and Ger Miley (both Bray Wheelers) but, despite the strength of the group, were caught after about ten miles.

Shortly afterwards three riders got clear - Brendan Lacey (Usher IRC), Stephen Enright (Leinster) and Noel McGlynn (Dublin Wheelers). Seven others succeeded in bridging across; Meehan, Kelly, Mick Fitzgerald (Ballymore CC), Aidan Dennehy (St. Finbarr's), Patrick Clarke (Castlebar), Mike Storan (Kanturk Credit Union) and Terry Ferris (Murphy and Gunn). This group was however reeled in at the 46 mile mark.

Woods and Munroe made their escape halfway around the final lap, getting clear after the climb, and quickly opened up a good lead over the bunch. Woods then forged ahead with one kilometre remaining, hitting the line five seconds clear for a fine win. Munroe took second, with Carrigan, O'Brien, Will Byrne (Hillcrest Hire Kilcullen) and Daniel Clifford (Killorglin Credit Union) completing the top six.

The Thornton's Waste Dunboyne Three Day concludes today with a 74 mile stage race.

Stage 4 - June 7: Road Race, 74 miles

Woods holds on

By Shane Stokes

Killorglin Credit Union rider Barry Woods had a nervous day of it in the Dunboyne Three Day today with two very dangerous breaks putting him out of yellow on the road, but he eventually held on to win the race outright. Woods finished 11 seconds clear of closest rival Donal Byrne (Orwell - Dundrum Shopping Centre), with John Mason (Cycleways Lee Strand) and John P. Lynch (Bray Wheelers) moving up into third and fourth overall as a result of their staying clear in a break to the finish.

First across the line today was Newbridge CC's Kenny Conlon, who outsprinted Lynch to take the 74 mile stage. Mason and Con Shortt (Newry Haldene) were third and fourth, one and four seconds back respectively, while Daniel Clifford (Killorglin Credit Union) and Colm Crawley (Stamullen M. Donnelly) led in the main bunch some 19 seconds after Conlon's win.

Wood's was under fire right from the start of the stage, with Mason and Lynch being part of a dangerous 14 man group which was away for most of the day. This group was recaptured with ten kilometres to go but then, about 3 kilometres from the line, the two showed great persistence and recovery to go clear again. They were joined by Conlon and Newry Haldene's Con Shortt and these four fought out the finish between them, Conlon getting it ahead of Lynch, Mason and Shortt.

Woods finished safely in the main bunch 19 seconds after Conlon and so held on to yellow. Mason and Lynch move up to third and fourth overall, leapfrogging Maurice O'Brien (Kanturk CU) and his fellow junior Martin Munroe (Western Lakes). The two drop to fifth and sixth, while Pat Byrne (Dublin Wheelers) and James Whelan (Leinster) complete the top eight.
