Medinilla takes Ontario Grand Prix

By Team Monex/Hot Wheels

Easter Sunday. A ninety-minute criterium under partly cloudy skies and very windy conditions. 100 riders and plenty of teams eager to get that elusive first win of the season gathered together in the dramatic surroundings of Ontario's finest Industrial Park. Team Monex/Hot Wheels fields three riders on the start line due to injuries including some broken ribs suffered by John Wordin on a training ride during the week.

The first 60 minutes of the race were marked by four distinct efforts by small groups to rid themselves of the field. The windy conditions and long straight portions of the course aided the rolling peloton, which managed to reel every little group back in. No real team efforts by any of the major entrants were detected, and the only moment of crisis came from an orange vinyl traffic cone, which caused quite a few riders to hit the deck about 45 minutes into the race.

At the 1-hour mark, Ken Toman (Monex/Hot Wheels) unleashed an attack on the long tailwind section of the course that caused havoc in it's wake. The solo attack lasted for 2.5 laps, at which time a fairly large group of 12 had untangled itself from the gasping peloton and chased down a steady Toman. The group contained Gregg Medinilla (Monex/Hot Wheels), Ryan Lane (RPM), and several other sprinting specialists. Toman worked diligently as the breakaway neared the end of the race, giving Medinilla a chance to sort himself out for the sprint.

With two laps to go, a dangerous attack by Rigo Meza (Schroeder Iron) was neutralized immediately by Toman, and no counterattack followed. As the endgame began, the two Monex/Hot Wheels riders organized, with Medinilla finding Toman's rear wheel during the last lap. The final corner, some 500 meters before the finish line, would prove to be the flash point for the final dash to the line.

With a severe cross-headwind, Toman launched the lead-out for the small bunch. With 150 meters to go, Monex/Hot Wheels Medinilla and the Schroeder Iron sprinting duo of Evan Teske and Rigo Meza flashed by the lunging Toman, with Monex/Hot Wheels emerging victorious, as evidenced by the two raised arms of an ecstatic Medinilla. Toman finished in 11th place, and the Monex/Hot Wheels team scored another victory.
