Riverland Cycling Club

May 20, 2006

The Riverland Cycling Club held Graded Scratch races around an 11km Loveday circuit on Sunday, with members using it as race preparation before the Tour of the Riverland next weekend.

E-Grade had an all-Renmark line-up, with Aileen Pelly and Gordon Lawton dominating for much of the race. New racing enthusiasts Megan Taylor and Glenn O'Brien held on for as long as they could before Pelly and Lawton saw an opportunity to bolt, and it was Pelly who claimed victory by only a bike-length.

The D-Grade riders set a consistent pace and riders notched up a 30km/hr average over their 4 laps. Criterium champions Marcus Whitting and Liam McDonald proved to be tactically superior than their more experienced rivals, waiting until 300m from the finish line to surge for 1st and 2nd respectively.

Waikerie's Craig Ward, returning from injury, rode superbly to push the average speed in C-Grade to 34km/hr over 4-laps. At the start of their 3rd lap C-Grade caught up with a depleted B-Grade to create a "super-bunch". Local Lovedayian Mick Gray bode his time in this group before making his move to claim victory in B-Grade, just ahead of Ward who claimed 1st for C-Grade.

Tour of the Riverland entrants Loxton's Hamish MacKirdy, Renmark's Lee Stevens and Barmera's Angus Boase were joined mid-way through their first lap by another entrant, Loxton's Josh Steele, who was making the most of the race to prepare for the 90km ride next weekend. Over their 5 laps, the riders stuck together to record an excellent 36.5km/hr average. MacKirdy made a jump past the other riders with only 200m to the line to claim A-Grade honours ahead of Stevens and Boase.

The next Club race will be a Handicapped road race starting at the Hollywood Store, Loxton on Sunday the 4th of June. The Club wishes Peter Weston luck in his half-marathon run at Tanunda next weekend, as well as all entrants in the Tour of the Riverland.
