McCluskey makes it two

Jim McCluskey showed his strength in the sprint to take his second victory for the year in yet another handicap race where scratch did not make up the distance. McCluskey now moves into the elite section of the club rankings. His effort today was very much like his last win with very robust finishing skills making it difficult for anyone to challenge him, although second-placed Robert Lee gave him a scare in the last 20 metres.

The race was dominated by a group made up of some in form riders working their way through the outmarkers and taking the front shortly after the S bends on the Kangarilla road on the second lap. This group had a mixture of the 28-minute through to 23-minute starting groups and was able to maintain a high work rate and stay away.

Spare a thought for the unflagging Peter Blackburn, who took sixth for the third time this year and his fellow determined worker Geoff Hillman, who took fifth for the third time. Both worked tirelessly driving the group up the road and were unfortunate not to have gained higher places given their efforts.

Third place went to Barry Timmins for his second result of the year. Fourth place was a club first major result for new rider Graham McLean, and James Russell finished with the fastest time on the day yet again. He has taken this prize in nearly every handicap race this season apart from one he missed and another in which he claimed victory back in January. The club has a number of improving riders at present, and the handicapping has been first-class, with a number of races with close finishes with scratch, although not taking the event, being very close at the finish.
