Tubby No More

Dave 'Tubby' Tyler rode away from the pack this weekend to claim his third victory with the club since joining in 2002 and put to rest his own generated nickname after some extensive training and weight loss. It clearly gave him an advantage out on the road. His improvement will be noted by the handicapper Geoff Hillman who featured with Tyler in his breakaway and cleaning up of the outmarkers early on the second lap of three of a rewarding circuit - near perfect conditions for racing. Tyler's demolition became a one man show as he displayed his improvement when catching all in front and proceeding to ride away to claim a remarkable solo victory. He was chased but not caught by a hard working group made up of riders from the 12 and 15 minute starters who took out all of the remaining places. Behind this group was a very formidable pack made up of the survivors and scratch, who despite a marvellous effort could not make up the ground today. Tyler had only one victory in 2004; another dazzling display in the Koffee and Snax scratch event in November.

Mike Wilson claimed a well earned second in the sprint for line involving the chasing pack. Third place went to improver Robert Freak who has made an marvellous start with the club after beginning in 2004 when he took six major results with one victory. All of these however have been in scratch events, and today's placing was his first result in a handicap event. Club stalwart and Time Trial Champion in Male Category 4 Chris White claimed fourth to make a formidable start to 2005 after a particularly successful 2004. David Cox continued his successful 2004 run with the club following up his six major results to take fifth place.

Fastest time was once again taken by James Russell who led home the largest group on the track and his scratch team mates. Improvers and a faster than expected mid field made it difficult for his group to reel in the earlier starters once again. Although without a strong effort from Tyler and the 12 and 15 minute groups victory would likely have gone his way today considering the favourable course and conditions.
