Carnegie Caulfield's final race for 2005 attracted a record midweek field of 213 riders to the Sandown racecourse on a hot but almost still night. Both the A and B Grade fields attracted close to seventy riders keen for one last hit out ahead of the Jayco Bay Series which will be held straight after the Christmas break.

A dangerous early break in A Grade that contained Richmond Cyclery team mates Rob Tighello and Dom Gatto, along with Brendan Rowbotham (SHM), Michael Ford (VIS), Mark Howard (O'Mara), Cam Wise (Pro-Motion), Matt Shea (Naughty Boy) and Daniel Nelms (webcycle) built a handy lead, before a succession of big turns from Danny Kah and Rob Crowe brought the bunch back into contact.

Nathan Wise (Richmond) had a couple of digs midway through the race, but approaching the final laps it seemed a bunch sprint was on the cards. An attack just before the start of the final two laps from Ford and Victorian Under 19 Keirin Champion Alex Smyth saw them open a ten second advantage, and the big bunch split trying to reel the pair in, with close to twenty riders putting pre-race favourites Tighello, Jonny Clarke (VIS) and Aaron Salisbury (HLP) out of contention.
In a tight sprint for the win, younger brother of Rabobank Pro Will Walker, Nick (CBD Cycles) looked like claiming the win, before US bound Tommy Nankervis (Fitzroy Cycles) flew home to make his first race for the season a win - to add to the amazing thirteen he collected last season. Ford led Andrew Stalder (Promains) and Wise home for the minor places.

Few riders were strong enough to escape the attentive B Grade bunch for long, with Steve Van Dyke (Fat Tyre Flyers) and Paul Kelly (Burnley Finance) the most successful. Aggressive in the chase were many of the state's leading women, including Jayco Dandenong Classic winner Jenny Macpherson (VIS) and Emma Rickards (Univega).
Father and son pair David and Jake O'Leary (Hampton Cycles) were also prominent, before an attack in the final two laps from Van Dyke and Matt Colston caught the bunch napping, with Colston taking the two-up sprint a few seconds ahead of the bunch. The O'Learys led the bunch home from team mate Damien Jones. Macpherson took out the women's section from Rickards, with Lisa Friend (Bianchi) also showing good from ahead of her first Bay Series appearance.

Daniel Oldfield took out the C Grade bunch sprint for a win which will see him move to B Grade in the New Year, with second going to another regular place getter Alister Stewart. Footscray veteran Ron Gallagher sprinted into third ahead of James Mowatt, while Fiona Adler was too good for the rapidly improving Rebecca Hanning and Louisa Judd (Hampton Cycles) in the battle for the women's cash.
After solo efforts from Andrea Bishop and Bob Farley were neutralised, the D Grade bunch were content to let a bunch sprint sort out the results. Leigh Rebbeck surged clear through the final corner, and held on for a good win, ahead of Dave Watson, Simon Frost and young Mitchell Gregory. Lindsay Brown (O'Mara) led the girls home, with Melissa Nicholls recording her best result for a while with second ahead of last week's winner Anni Jensen (Kathy Watt's Personal Training).

Carnegie Caulfield's next race will be back at Sandown on January 3rd for Tuesday Twilight racing, with the Sandown Road gate opening at 6pm for a 6.30pm race start for all grades. Criteriums are also held on Sunday mornings at Glenvale Crescent, Mulgrave (Melways map 80B2) with new start times for 2006: B, D and E Grades will start at 9am, while A and C Grade will ride at 10am.
All holders of current Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent. For further details, go to www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
