Clarke wins after six-man break laps bunch

An early break of six strong A Grade riders paid off in hot and windy conditions for the first post daylight savings race of the season. After an unsuccessful suicide second lap solo by a rider who should have known better, Simon Clarke (BikeNOW), Mitchell Docker (Drapac – Porsche), Matt Goold (Team MG-ZT) and Danny Kah went clear after fifteen minutes.
With Docker’s team mate Brad Norton slowing the bunch, the chase fell apart, and only Ray Turner (Bianchi) and MG-ZT policeman Rob Young were able to bridge the growing gap. Norton consistently found his way to the front of the bunch anytime the chase looked dangerous, and the break was quickly out of sight. Katie Mactier (Fitzroy Cycles) continued to impress with her work ethic in the bunch, one of only a handful to contribute to the chase for the full hour. Nick Sheard, Paul Kelly (SBR) and Martin Bole were others prepared to suffer unsuccessfully.
The six leaders gained a lap on the 1.2 kilometer circuit right on the hour, and with the bunch pulled from the circuit, faced the final three laps alone to determine the placings. Young lost contact as the break charged past the bunch, leaving five to sprint for the win, with Simon Clarke showing his speed to take the win, ahead of Docker. Kah held out Goold for third with Turner settling for fifth.
The B Grade race also saw a break succeed, with early attackers Peter McWeeney and E Grade coach Mick Hollingworth joined by Boon Chia (Team Alex), Jan Wilhoeft (Pro-Motion Bicycles), ‘Crazy’ Dave Eadie (BikeNOW) and hearing impaired rider Reece Van Beek. Rower Ben Hegerty and Daniel Strangio chased across, before Hegerty rolled a tyre on the fastest corner of the circuit and crashed out.
Hollingworth and McWeeney found the young guns to fresh approaching the finish, with the win going to Wilhoeft, the youngest rider in the break. Chia had to settle for another frustrating second place, but a win can’t be too far away, with Eadie – fresh from his sub 10 hour Ironman at Hawaii - taking third ahead of Van Beek and Strangio.
Paul Mason reversed his narrow second place finish behind training partner Scott Brown in the C Grade race, taking the bunch sprint by half a wheel after a fast paced race. The pair took five lengths out of the bunch in the sprint, with visiting hearing impaired rider Jarrod Denman relegating Tuesday night’s winner Brett Rossiter (Bicycle Superstore) to fourth place.
Chris Menesis followed up his maiden win from Tuesday night in the best possible way, earning a ride in C Grade with another clear sprint win. Young Daniel Atkin was second, ahead of veterans John Walker (Victorian State Home Loans) and John Groves. Melissa Kah took out the Women’s division.
Simon Lancaster’s first A Grade ride saw him finish out of the places, but with the only riders within striking distance also unplaced, has now sewn up first place - a Nexus X-3 frameset - in the $7000 Team Alex Series. With only four rounds remaining, the battle for second place and a Nexus X-1 frameset remains extremely close with Warren Knevitt (139) back into second place ahead of Cheryl Walker (138), Simon Walker (133) and Matt Jensen (131).
Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Sunday morning in April at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). All holders of 2004 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts racing clinics in E Grade.
