Illawarra Cycle Club

March 14, 2004

When it rains it's Paulls

Craig Paull out-sprinted the A-grade field to win the Illawarra Cycle Club’s scratch race last Sunday. Paull has quickly adapted to cycle racing and impressed club officials with his talent in only his fourth race.

Paull edged out Dylan Forbes and Daniel Silveri for second and third places respectively.

Although rain had discouraged many riders and caused the postponement of the scheduled feature race, twenty riders raced over three grades.

Six A-grade riders rode evenly with everyone taking advantage of an opportunity to attack the bunch at some stage. Most active were Paull and Graham Rutter who tried to get away several times on both of the two laps. Rutter demonstrated considerable speed and nearly caught the lead car on two occasions.

The group were vigilant though and were careful not to let the dangerous pairing of Rutter and Silveri get away. By the final climb to the railway bridge the race was back together for the final four kilometer leg back to the finish line with Rob Calladine controlling the pace.

In the run to the line Paull, looking as though he had done it a thousand times before, came off third wheel to pull past a desperate Forbes and Silveri.

A six strong B-grade field saw another new rider taste victory. Justin Lathlean rode cautiously throughout the race and kept enough left to out-sprint Mitchell Burns. Joe Pereira rolled across the line in third. Their race was at a fast pace and saw recent graduates from C-grade, Tony Burke and Mitch Harris lose touch earlier.

C-grade riders stayed together for most of their race with only Jason Johnson, returning to race fitness losing touch with the bunch. Paul Kaye produced an impressive burst of speed to win the sprint from Mal Moss and Dean Kelly. A determined David Hull was delighted to finish with the bunch.

Next weeks marshals are group 7. See the website for details of next week’s race.
