Trek Bikes Summer Series #2

Heffron Park, Maroubra, January 13, 2004

World champ Wooldridge wins

By John Sunde

World Teams Pursuit Champion, Steve Wooldridge opened his 2004 pro season with a powerhouse win in the 2nd round of the Trek Bikes Summer Series at Heffron Park on Tuesday night. Although Wooldridge, who will be racing in Europe for the German Comnet-Senges team is unlikely to be around for the entire 12 week Series, there will be plenty of interest in this year's Series 1st prize of a Trek 5500 carbon frame valued at A$3200. Jose Rodriguez (Easts/Albion Cycles) backed up last weeks opening round win with a strong 3rd place last night and now leads the series pointscore by 6 points from his nearest local rival.

Racing got underway in very hot conditions and the threat of a late afternoon thunderstorm sitting on the horizon which fortunately never eventuated. Adding to the excitement, drama and fun this week was Mike Tomalaris and his SBS TV crew who were filming the race for SBS's weekly show which airs Sundays at 5.30pm, so tune in this week to see live action from Heffron, along with a host of other top cycling stories.

Over 80 riders lined up for the 30km grade handicap format over 15laps of the 2km Heffron Park circuit and it was GO from the gun - it's amazing what a TV camera can do! B grade started the race and with almost 35 riders were the easily the largest bunch and after the first two laps were almost looking like the fastest. Bike courier Peter McDonald, who never seems to tire was again driving the pace which had the entire bunch strung out and constantly chasing wheels.

A feature of the Trek Bikes Series is the intermediate sprint competition on the 7, 5, 3 and final laps for A & B grades and although the first sprint of the night almost eliminated the entire bunch when Dave Whyman (Lidcombe) managed to fall spectacularly after pulling his foot, the next two sprints went smoothly as a small group including new sprint leader, Peter McDonald escaped to grab the points.

With three laps to go, the C grade bunch which had in previous weeks looked far more threatening, seemed to run out of pace as they were about to be swamped by B grade and an incredibly fast finishing A grade bunch. Wooldridge lead the A grade train and had plenty of support from mountain bikers Paul Rowney and Peter Hatton (who was reported to be the strongest rider of the night), US based Jelly Belly pro, Ben Brooks, NSW/La Francaise des Jeux squad lead by Rodney McGee and of course, Easts big motors Rodriguez, Stewart Campbell and David Stewart.

With the entire field strung out the length of the straight at the bell, the winning move came from mountain biker Hatton and track champ Wooldridge with Wooldridge taking the win with a strong sprint at the finish, then a gap back to Rodriguez who lead in McGee and Computer.

Polish rider, Jerzy Sowa now riding for Randwick Botany had another very strong race and easily took the 1st B grade prize. Multisport athlete, Danny Iannazzo (Easts) came home first to win C grade, but last weeks winner, Duncan Markham (Easts) managed to take the lead in the C grade pointscore with 3rd place.

A very hard, hot and fast nights racing in what promises to be a keenly contested Trek Bikes Summer Series. Remember, the licence police are out, so if you haven't got one yet, get one so you won't be disappointed if you turn up to race. SBS TV Sunday night at 5.30pm for cycling action on Cycling Central and coming up on Australia Day Monday 26th January, Heffron Park's big summer showcase race, the 11th Joseph Sunde Memorial Criteriums.
