Illawarra CC Handicap

West Dapto, NSW, January 11, 2003

Silveri breaks through

Another good turn out of 36 riders took part in the 27km handicap last Sunday morning at West Dapto. Clear skies and a slight crosswind looked promising for the riders but the times were down on the last handicap raced two weeks ago that saw a new course record set by Peter Jones. Jones again took out fastest time but it was almost two minutes slower than his record of 36'54".

Daniel Silveri broke through for the biggest win of his short cycling career with a well deserved win from Tony Pulo and Jason Johnson. Silveri has been improving at a great rate of knots and his future looks promising.

Silveri and Pulo were members of the 3 minute bunch that placed six riders in the top ten finishers. By the end of the first lap, the 6 minute bunch had caught the two bunches in front of them and were looking quite good. The 3 minute bunch caught the 4 minute group just as they started the second lap.

Although the scratch and block bunches were moving quite quickly they were not making much impression on the 3 minute group. At the start of the third and final lap the 3 minute group caught the 5 minute bunch and then the 6 minute group. Silveri, Pulo, Michael Comensoli, Rob Calladine, Joe Pereira and Brian Joyce were driving the leading group along. Warren Poole, Garry Doughty and Peter Evans were also giving them a few turns.

Pulo led the sprint out but was quickly marked and over hauled by Silveri. From then on it was a drag race to the line. The top seven were Silveri, Pulo, Johnson, Pereira, Emma Ringer, Calladine and Phil Jones. Adam Rourke rode an impressive race; after puncturing and changing his wheel, he was able to catch back up to the scratch bunch.

Next week's race is a 37.5km scratch race with group 8 supplying the marshals.
