Southern Veterans Cycling Club

JT Cycles Handicap, August 1, 2004

Giles Storms Home

South Australian Road Racing Champion in age category four John Giles took his second victory with the Southern Veterans this year and stormed to the top of the club rankings claiming his ninth result of the season by taking victory in the JT Cycles sponsored club handicap this weekend. Giles has continued his excellent run of results and has become the most successful rider with the club continuing a most consistent and impressive run of results.

Giles edged out fellow scratchman Dean Bevelander in the sprint for the line after the race went according to handicap with the scratch riders picking up all the rest of the field. It was Bevelanders fourth result this season after a successful State road titles in which he claimed a silver medal in category one.

Paul Bell took third riding with the one minute group. All the first ten places were made up of riders from scratch through to the four minute groups. Bell is another consistent rider with the club taking his club tally to seven this season.

Bell and the fourth and placed riders were all involved in the sprint for the victory but Giles was the strongest on the line. All five recorded the same time. Justin Dawson claimed fourth ahead of John Zoanettti. Dawson is yet another consistent rider with seven major results this season. Zoanetti has five major results and a silver medal in the State Road Racing Championship in category three.

The first ten riders were separated by very little time with leading club rider Neville Elliot taking sixth only three seconds behind the sprinting pack and a group of three 40 seconds behind him containing some well known club names. Norman Hoy, Con Bastiras, Syd Carter and Bob Seymour took the remaining minor places.
