Neilsen too strong in A grade

Moore, Hogg tied in E grade

Rockhampton Cycle Club opened its road season with a strong show of cyclists for its first race of the 2004 season. With the skies threatening and at stages throughout the afternoon opening up a shower of rain upon the cyclists, racing went ahead.

With the A Grade riders easing the pace to join the B grade riders early in the race, the complexity of the race changed and saw a few riders breakaway early after a crash taking a few riders out of contention.

In the final stages, Steven Neilsen was too strong for Brian Bagster over the 46km. In B Grade 46km race, a great sprint finish showed Gavin Hopes as the surprise packet early in the season, taking line honours over his younger counterpart, Sterling Milne. Both Hopes and Milne have been putting in the long miles over the track season and will be the ones to watch in B grade this season.

In the C Grade 46km event, Talent ID Product Jack Rassie showed off his sprinting ability, outsprinting Stefan Smith and Dean Stapleton for the line.

In D Grade, Queensland track cyclist Michelle Simpson was too strong in the sprint finish after Sam O’Keeffe and Laura Edwards hit their sprinting straps too early and with Ian Deakin in tow, providing a good lead out for Simpson who took out D grade ahead of Marcus Holmes and Ian Deakin.

In E Grade, Ben Moore and Nick Hogg tied for first place after a sprint for the finish in their 23km race while in the 8km F Grade circuit, David Smitd was too strong for Bryce Lohmann and Penny O’Dea.
