Faferko strong, youngsters impress

Despite predictions of heavy rain in Sydney on this day we were lucky to get through the entire programme without a drop. However conditions were far from ideal for cycling with a very strong southerly wind buffeting the riders as they ploughed up the main straight at Waratah Park, Sutherland.

Southern Cross had over 30 of its junior members competing at the Wagga Wagga 2 day tour on this weekend which left numbers a little depleted, however the racing was still fiercely contested.

The Under 9s, 11s and 13s start proceedings with a handicap race around the flatter number 2 circuit. In the under 9s Laura Triggs led the field out as the limit marker and was never caught by the field. Tom Matthews who has only been racing for a couple of weeks impressed again with an extremely strong ride off scratch (3:00) to finish only a couple of seconds behind Laura Triggs who had to keep her strong effort up to stop him getting by in the finishing stages. Bonnie Grant continued to show consistency with a solid third placing.

The under 11s race saw scratch marker Ben Grant produce a very solid ride to come through with the win. The early stages saw Campbell Hartos off limit and Jarred Triggs starting a further minute behind start very well and maintained that effort to the end of the race, though they were unable to contend with the effort of the experienced Ben Grant.

We only had one rider in the under 13s field, Paris Ross, who was competing in her first race in very tough conditions given the strong winds. In what was more of time trial Paris posted a very respectable time of 24:35 for the ten-lap journey. She will cause some worry for the other competitors in this group when they return form their open commitments.

For the competitors in the categories u17s through to Masters the decision was made to combine their races in to one crit race with the interest being spiced up by splitting the field into through groups and running the race as a group handicap. The tough track 3 circuit was raced, this with the strong winds certainly tested the riders.

Several riders in the limit group really impressed, Wayne Hartos and Greg Tannos really worked well together to hold off the more favoured riders from the second group for a good number of laps. Janelle Barnard and Courtney Ross, in only her second race, also impressed with the way they worked together.

In the end though the fancied riders from the scratch group were to strong with a convincing win by Matthew Faferko, Brad Stiller showed his strength with coming into second sometime behind Matthew, while Adam Proudlock came through with a third just in front of the strong finishing Alex Faferko who seemed to love the tough conditions.
