For the first time this season, it didn't rain, and it wasn't blowing a gale for a Carnegie Caulfield road race! A good field of just under 80 riders took to the start line, for three laps of the Bayles circuit. The Limit riders were given a 28 minute advantage over the back markers, with another five bunches separating the front and back of the field.

The middle marks had strength in numbers over the Scratchies, and without any significant cross winds to put big bunches into difficulty the back markers were a little disadvantaged. A first lap puncture to Dylan Boone (Fitzroy Cycles) and his incompatible 'retro' 8-speed set up saw him out of the race early, making things even tougher for the Scratch markers.

Out front, the Limit bunch were learning quickly under the guidance of Mike Goldie, but were picked up by the 22 minute bunch approaching the end of the first lap. When the 17 minute bunch made contact, the horsepower was there to hold off any challenge from the riders behind, and twelve riders survived to tackle the final lap.

Trevor Cameron , who had taken out the C Grade race over the hills in the wet the week before was looking very strong, and attacked the bunch at the final turn, with just over two kilometres to travel. John Tassell (Pro-Motion Bicycles) was quick to follow, while veteran Tom Moloney tried in vain to close the gap.

Tassell found himself stuck on the front approaching the line, and wasn't able to hold off the fast finishing Cameron's surge in the final fifty meters. Moloney, one of the older riders in the field at 60, toughed it out to hold on for third five seconds down, just ahead of the bunch lead home by Under 17 rider Alex Smyth.

Gemma Goyne was the only Limit rider to finish with the front group, and sprinted home in 7th overall, easily taking out the Women's prize.

After a tough chase, the Scratch bunch finally made contact with Second Scratch, but were never in contention. Ryan Kelly (Terry Hammond Cycles) jumped away before the final corner in an attempt to claim Fastest Time honours, but was a little unlucky to have riders from the Second Scratch bunch combine to help reel him in. In a very close sprint, Joel Pearson (Bikeland) lead out with Leigh De Luca tucked in nicely. De Luca got the judges nod with a well timed throw, with the evergreen Gary Clively (Fitzroy Cycles) was a length behind.

In the Junior race over one lap of the circuit, four riders survived to contest the finish. Under 15 stars Sean Bourke and Peter Johnstone drag raced down the finishing straight, with Bourke taking the win by half a wheel. James Mulling claimed third ahead of a rapidly improving Paul Welsh.

Criteriums at Metec and Dalmore Drive for the next two weekends, before Carnegie Caulfield hosts the Lenny Hammond Memorial Handicap over 100 flat kilometres at Modella on July 12, with entries from 1.00pm for a 1.30pm start. Full details are available at www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
