Eastern Suburbs CC Trophy Race

The Saints go marching in

Sutton claims back to back wins

By Jeff Jones

The St. George club - represented by three different jerseys - dominated the placings in the annual Eastern Suburbs CC Trophy Race at Heffron Park on Tuesday night. The top three spots were all taken out by St. George riders, with Chris "CJ" Sutton (NSWIS-FDJeux.com) winning his second consecutive Trophy Race in front of Steve Fitzpatrick and U.S. based professional Ben Brooks (Jelly Belly) in a bunch sprint.

With a combined A and B grade field for the 20 lap (40.4 km) race, there were approximately 50 starters on the line on a cool, but not particularly windy Sydney evening. The field included professionals Ben Brooks (Jelly Belly), Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joe's) and Trent Wilson (Flanders-iteamNova), as well as defending champion Chris Sutton and Rod McGee (NSWIS-FDJeux.com), and strong contingents from Clarence St. Cyclery, Eastern Suburbs and Randwick Botany. The big name missing was Anthony Spurgeon, an eight time winner of this race who chose to sit it out tonight due to a lack of form in recent weeks.

The race started fast and got faster, as attack after attack went off the front, only to be brought back by the concerted efforts of the bunch, which seemed to be favouring a bunch sprint. Visiting Englishman Stuart Dangerfield (Eastern Suburbs) tried several times to split the field with 50 km/h turns into the head/crosswind down the main straight but the small gaps created quickly closed up.

After chasing down more attacks in the last three laps, the reduced field started to organise (in the loosest possible sense of the word) itself for the mass sprint. As they headed into the back straight on the last lap, favourites Ben Brooks and Jeff Hopkins were surprised to find themselves on the tail end of the bunch. "Shit, we're last," commented Hopkins, which prompted a desperate move by he and Brooks up the right hand side of the track into the wind, taking a slight detour across the grass when they found anyone in their way.

In just a few hundred metres, Brooks and Hopkins had moved themselves almost to the front of the bunch, where Chris Sutton was getting ready for his final blast. In the end, Sutton's sprint proved to be the best, followed by Steve Fitzpatrick with Brooks and Hopkins doing remarkably well to get up for third and fourth.

In the 15 lap C grade race held at the same time as the A graders, Frank "FRF" Fortuna (Randwick Botany) went one better than last year and won the sprint in front of clubmate Andy Matthews and Dan Innazzo (Eastern Suburbs). Australian representative Emma James (Bicisport) took home the prize for first female rider home.

Eastern Suburbs CC will take a break over Christmas and resume its Tuesday night racing on January 6 with the first round of the summer series.
