Haedo takes second victory

A flat tire in the final eight kilometres did not put a dent in Sebastian Haedo's pursuit of a second stage victory at the Joe Martin Stage Race. The Argentinean sprinter relied on a fast bike change and full support from his Colavita-Sutter Home teammates to drive him through the peloton and into full sprint mode. Haedo won the bunch sprint ahead of Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V Australia) and Nic Sanderson (Rock Racing).
"I'm happy to win again but my team rode fantastic today so I have to thank them," said Haedo who keyed off of Team Type 1 in the field sprint. "We were trying to be very aggressive and force a breakaway. I honestly did not think I would see a field sprint today."
Rory Sutherland (OUCH p/b Maxxis) held onto to a nine-second lead ahead of Bissell duo Ben Jacques-Maynes and Jeremy Vennell. According to OUCH directeur Sportif, Mike Tamayo, he lost a few riders to tremendous team chase that narrowly brought back a threatening ten-man break. He thanked teams Fly V Australia, Land Rover-Orbea and Planet Energy, who did not have riders represented in the break, for contributing to closing down the gap before the finish.
"It was grenade after grenade after grenade," Tamayo said. "That was awesome racing, one of the hardest days of US bike racing because every team raced really hard. We sank behind the eight-ball and got some help from the other teams in the end. "
"It was war today"
The men completed three laps of a 38-kilometre circuit, totalling 147 kilometres with some 6000 feet of climbing. The race was hot from the gun and the team that had the most to gain from a break away was Bissell with two riders sitting in close contention behind Sutherland.
"To see our effort really paying off like that was great," Jacques-Maynes said. "We thought we could make it stick and definitely force them [OUCH] to work today. If they are going to win they are really going to have to work hard for it."
Bissell initiated a flurry of attacks on the first of three laps that resulted in a six-man breakaway. It included Morgan Schmitt, Anthony Colby (Colavita-Sutter Home), Eric Bauman (Kelley Benefit Strategies), Darren Lill and Matt Wilson (Team Type 1) and Matt Crane (Jelly Belly). The gap grew to over a minute over the undulating terrain despite OUCH p/b Maxxis grave efforts to reduce to time margin.
Sensing the leading team's vulnerability, Bissell sent off a second round of ammo at the base of the climb on lap two. Four additional riders split from the main group, this time it was a more threatening group of GC contenders including third placed, Vennell along with Luis Amaran (Colavita-Sutter Home), Sean Milne (Team Type 1) and Chris Baldwin (Rock Racing).
"We tried to go for it today and we the guys were strong," said Jacques-Maynes. "We rode a really tactically smart race. We just didn't have the luck to make it stick in the end. That's bike racing and OUCH did a good job. I believe they rode as hard as they could and in the end the got what they wanted out of it."
The two leading groups joined to form ten-men and maintained a minute and half gap to the peloton at the start of the third and final lap. Sutherland's teammates buried themselves over the climb and although the time began to drop, the leader became isolated, losing several teammates in the chase. "When we hit the climb the second time, we had been chasing hard up to that point. Bissell smacked us so hard there and the four new guys got away. It was definitely a struggle over the top. We were in trouble and we lost a couple of guys."
Fly V Australia was the first to join the chase with Phil Zajicek in fourth place overall and Cantwell, a formidable sprinter in the bunch. Teams Land Rover-Orbea and Planet Energy were not represented in the break and also took part in the chase. The bunch caught the ten-rider break on the ten-kilometre descent to the finish line.
"At one point there were about thirty guys rotating at the front for various reasons," Jacques-Maynes said. "I believe if OUCH didn't get that help, that break would not have come back. It was unfortunate to see some teams who weren't in the finale, working hard for not much gain. I think we lost out on that. But we kept attacking until the end. All in all it was a very hard race."
Van Gilder scores victory, Powers excited for finale criterium
Laura van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) added another salute to more than 300 career victories on her palmares. Through the midst of a gnarly field sprint, she found her own path to the finish line ahead of Katharine Carroll (TIBCO) and Gina Grain (Webcor-Builders).
"I was thrilled to hold off a charging bunch," said Van Gilder who safely positioned herself on the opposite side of the road to where the organized lead-outs formed. "I just happened to see an opening as the sprint took shape and I took it."
Close time gaps in the GC meant that the field sprints have been hotly contested by sprinters aiming for stage wins and all-arounders hunting valuable seconds at the finish line. Alison Powers (Team Type 1) attained the leaders jersey in the stage one time trial and continues to hold four seconds of padding ahead of Katheryn Mattis (Webcor-Builders). Carroll moved into third place by virtue of the time bonuses collected from her back-to-back podium finishes in stages two and three.
"We've definitely had our work cut out for us which is cool because that means the other teams are racing," Powers said. "My team was amazing, riding well together and everyone does a lot of work. I'm honored. Today we were hoping to get one of our sprinters up there to take some time bonus away and everyone had to do a lot of work. We didn't get a time bonus but they raced great."
The women completed two laps of a 55-kilometre circuit, totaling 110 kilometres with some 3500 feet of climbing. According to van Gilder all teams were very aggressive, pushing to coordinate the right breakaway combination. Several moves gained small amounts of time on the field but with time margins so close between the overall contenders, a non-threatening group never formed.
Chrissy Ruiter (Value Act Capital) took a stab at a breakaway and gained approximately 30 seconds on the field. She made her move before the start of the second circuit and muscled her way over the loop's decisive climb. However, her ninth place position in the overall, 33 seconds behind the leader, made the attempt unlikely to last for more than 10 kilometres.
"This event was so highly contested by the teams," said van Gilder about the savvy tactics in the women's peloton. "The courses are raceable and very strategic, each day all the teams have gone out on the offensive to go for the leader's jersey. We [Mellow Mushroom] have been fortunate enough to respond to that. We are really happy that this little team of ours, compositing together for this big race. We are making sure we keep our goals in focus. I'm happy we have been abele to achieve what we have so far."
Van Gilder's second place finish in the previous day's field sprint was a good indication that she would be racing for the win today. "It was a typical super-fast lead in to the finish," she recapped the long down hill sprint. "TIBCO, dialed in their lead out perfectly. Webcor was attacking a lot and that morphed into a lead-out for Gina. Team Type 1 wanted to keep it safe for Alison. All that together is a recipe for a hurdling mass of bodies going to the finish. I had my three teammates. It's good to look around and see them there."
The women will contest the last and arguably the toughest stage of the Joe Martin Stage Race at the stage four criterium held in downtown Fayetteville. It is held on a two-kilometre, technical circuit. It starts and finishes on a steep uphill section making this criterium less about speed and more about attrition and technical prowess. "I love the criterium here," said Powers who placed third in 2006 and proved her strong technical ability. "It was technical and challenging and that is what I do best at. I have several teammates who like that stuff too. So we are really excited."
