Defending Joe Martin Stage Race champion Rory Sutherland (OUCH-Maxxis) is aiming to repeat his victory at the 32nd annual which starts on Thursday, May 7 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Australian National Racing Calendar champion has won the past two editions of the event.

"Joe Martin is the type of race that if you’re a good sprinter, who can also put in a good time trial in the opening stage and get over some of the climbs, you can get some good results here," said OUCH-Maxxis directeur sportif Mike Tamayo. "Andrew Pinfold and Karl Menzies are both guys who are well suited for this race.”

The four day NRC stage race also marks round two of the Women's Prestige Cycling Series. The event will host more than 700 athletes from around the world and has again attracted high ranked American teams in the professional men's and women's categories.

The OUCH-Maxxis team will lead a stellar men's peloton, fresh off of a good performance at last week's Tour of the Gila. Key riders who will look to give Sutherland a run for his money include Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell), Anthony Colby (Colavita-Sutter Home), Matt Rice (Jelly Belly), Jacob Erker (Kelly Benefit Strategies), Roman van Uden (Land Rover-Orbea), Chris Baldwin (Rock Racing), Heath Blackgrove (Hotel San Jose), Daniel Ramsey (Team Mountain Khakis), Francois Parisien (Planet Energy), Ben Day (Fly V Australia), Stefan Rothe (Texas Tough), Matt White (Bikereg.com) and Cory Collier (Team Rio Grand).

The Women's Prestige Series includes four nationally ranked stage races that began in March with the Redlands Bicycle Classic. It will resume at the Joe Martin Stage Race and move on to the Nature Valley Grand Prix and the Cascade Cycling Classic.

Team TIBCO leads the way in the team competition along with the series' most talented young rider, Julie Beveridge. United States of America Time Trial Champion Alison Powers (Team Type 1) currently leads the individual classification while her team-mate Kori Seehafer holds the top spot in the best sprinter category.

“I have big expectations for Alison with the time trial being first,” Team Type 1 women’s Director Jack Seehafer said. “I will also be looking to Jen for stage wins and I hope to see a podium finish in the general classification by week’s end.”

Also highlighting the race on the women's side, USA Road and Criterium Champion Brook Miller (TIBCO), Kristin McGrath and Kristin Sanders (Value Act Capital), Erinne Willock and Katheryn Mattis (Webcor-Builders), Dotsie Bausch (Jazz Apple), Denise Ramsden (Kenda Tire), Sabrina Savage (Veloforma) and Kristin LaSasso (Chaparat Cycling).

The stages

Stage one - May 7: A four kilometre uphill Individual Time Trial held in the notorious Devil's Den State Park will set the stage. The climb averages out at 6.8 percent, sure to shake up the overall classification early on.

Stage two - May 8: The men will have over 5,400 feet of climbing stretched over a 179 kilometres. The toughest climb is located mid-race at a three percent grade over 16-kilometres. The finishing straight has a six percent uphill grade over the last 350 metres. The women will compete on a shorter version of the same circuit. They will climb more than 3500 feet over 110 kilometres from start to finish.

Stage three - May 9: The men will race a shorter distance than the previous day, 147 kilometres, but face more climbing at 6000 feet. The women will race 110 kilometres on the same circuit with some 3500 feet of climbing. Both categories will complete laps of a 38 kilometre loop that features over 1,500 feet of climbing per lap.

Stage four - May 10: The climbing does not end here. The downtown Fayetteville criterium is held on a two kilometre, technical circuit. It starts and finishes on a steep uphill section make this criterium less about speed and more about attrition. The men will complete 90 minutes and the women 60 minute where the 2009 Joe Martin Stage Race winners will emerge.
