Vitoria claims another as race gets new leader

Swiss rider David Vitoria (Rock Racing) claimed a second stage victory at the Vuelta Mexico Telmex today, but under very different circumstances to his previous day’s win. Vitoria had been allowed some breathing room on the previous stage to claim a solo win, but the 2.44 he picked up on general classification meant he was an overall threat on today’s 215 kilometre stage to Toluca.
The threat posed by Vitoria’s escape forced Venezuelan rider Jackson Rodriguez (Serramenti Pvc Diquigiovanni - Androni Giocattoli) follow the rider’s move. Rodriquez made it to the finish line with Vitoria, claiming second place.
As has been the case on every stage to date, a Mexican rider also made the final stage podium. Carlos Lopez (Canel'S Turbo) was once again on the podium, taking third place some 32 seconds behind Vitoria and Rodriguez.
The trio’s efforts over stage five shattered the peloton. As a result the general classification standings have also undergone a massive make over, with the stage trio also in the top three overall.
Rodriguez took over the general classification lead from teammate Gilberto Simoni, who finished the day 2.15 minutes down. Rodriguez has a 30 second lead over Lopez, while Vitoria is a further 12 seconds behind.
The trio will be eagerly watching one another on tomorrow’s 177 kilometre stage to Guanajuato. With just three stages left in the race and less than a minute covering the most active riders in the race, the event is winding up to an exciting climax.
