Race 4 - March 8: Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, 110km

Brown cuts through Barloworld's dominance

On the final day of the four individual Giro del Capo races Barloworld's dominance ended when Arran Brown (Medscheme) outsprinted Robert Hunter. Nolan Hoffman of Neotel cam in third in the bunch sprint to the line after 110 kilometres.

A smiling Hunter was proud of his team and said his mates rode well, considering the strong winds and dust storms the peloton faced. About 23km before the end, the peloton split into a 40-man breakaway, which resulted in a bunch sprint to the finish line. Barloworld's Daryl Impey, Chris Froome, John-Lee Augustyn, Stephen Cummings and Felix Cardenas were all working hard to pave the way for Hunter.

Stephen Cummings proved that the climb up Chapman's peak, which was opened especially for today's event, was a fairly simple climb when he took home the Powerade King of the Mountains jersey. Cummings won the third stage of the Giro del Capo in Paarl on Friday,

Team Manager Claudio Corti found the result pleasing. "The wind was strong – it was a bit dangerous out there, but the team is in good form and kept pushing. Our team took control in the front of the peloton early in the race."

Swede Stenerhag claims sprint win

It took a photo finish to determine that Swedish rider Jennie Stenerhag (Alpha Pharm) had pipped five-time champion Anriette Schoeman (Nashua Telecoms) to the finish in a thrilling sprint to win the women’s title at the 2009 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. Gale force winds made for difficult conditions and the professional women raced with the 40-49-year-old racing veteran men, making for a fast pace from the start.

Only a handful of women were able to stay with the leading men’s group over the famous climbs of Chapman’s Peak and Suikerbossie, resulting in a chaotic sprint with the men and women each racing for podium places in their respective categories.

Schoeman believed she’d won, throwing up an arm in celebration as she crossed the finish, but was unaware that Stenerhag was on her left and centimetres ahead. Marissa van der Merwe (MTN) rounded out the podium places.
