Double win for Fernandez
Euskaltel-Euskadi's Koldo Fernandez took the stage and the overall lead with a powerful sprint victory in the second stage of Volta ao Algarve in Lagos. The Spaniard bested Manuel Cardoso (Liberty Seguros) and Milram's Gerald Ciolek to secure the overall lead over stage one winner, Heinrich Haussler (Cervélo).
The 183.5km stage saw a breakaway go clear just five kilometres in, with Martijn Maaskant (Garmin-Slipstream), Hervé Duclos-Lasalle (Cofidis), Pedro Lopes (CC Loulé-Louletano-Aquashow) and Preben Van Hecke (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator) being joined 25km later by Sergio Sousa (Madeinox-Boavista) and Celestino Pinho (Fercase-Paredes Rota dos Móveis).
The six riders gained a maximum advantage of 7:30 early on, but the chase by the Astana and Cervélo teams kept the move in check as the stage progressed. Pinho mopped up enough points in the mountain sprints to take over the lead in that classification, while Duclos-Lasalle took both of the intermediate sprints. As the peloton closed in, Duclos-Lasalle and Van Hecke attacked the break and held onto their advantage until 5km to go.
Fernandez took the uphill sprint, earning enough bonus seconds to become the race's new leader. Haussler now sits in second overall, four seconds behind Fernandez. Sousa, who factored into the breakaway on the first stage, earned enough bonus seconds to hang onto his third place overall.
